Volunteer at Homeless World Cup While You Explore Australia

Homeless World Cup

The Homeless World Cup is an annual international football (American “soccer”) tournament that unites teams of homeless and excluded individuals throughout the world – in a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country and change their lives.

Soccer FieldThe event attracts around 25,000 people who take part in training and trials around the world. The top 500 players from 48 nations come together to compete at the Homeless World Cup.

The 2008 event will be hosted by The Big Issue Australia with the support of the State Government in Melbourne, Australia from November 29 to December 15, 2008.

The Homeless World Cup: History

The impact on the lives of the Homeless World Cup participants is significant. Around three quarters of its players change their lives for the better after giving the opportunity to play in the Cup. They stop abusing drugs and alcohol; get jobs, education, homes, training; and are even reunited with their families.

Some participants go on to become players and coaches for pro or semi-pro football teams! This event is more than just an international football match, but it gives the homeless, excluded and oppressed a real way to succeed. Alternatively, it gives many of us a chance to understand what the human spirit can achieve, no matter how much one’s bank account holds.
