Peek Into Zooplankton Life 2008

This film shows variety of zooplankton behaviors which you cannot see your naked eyes.

Ostracods, zooplankton in jar from pond

Some ostracods eats dead worm. I made this ecosphere out of pond water that I filed the jar with. The whole action took place one month after the ecosphere was made. More about that: http://eigio.user.lt/eco.html

Ocean Productivity - Zooplankton & Primary Productivity

In this segment, we briefly explore the role of zooplankton as consumers of and contributors to primary production.

Zooplankton

Saw something moving shortly after turning off my aquarium light. Turned the light back on and saw bristle worm larvae swarming up into the water column in my reef tank...just as zooplankton does in the ocean at sunset.

Migrations into the Ocean's Interior

How would you like to migrate 100 miles to get your daily meals? That's what some zooplankton do. Learn more about these incredible journeys as Mark Ohman shares his fascinating research into this microscopic world. Series: "Perspectives on Ocean Science" [8/2002] [Science] [Show ID: 6650]

Phronima!

Phronima (pram bug amphipod) are some of the weirdest zooplankton I have seen. We caught several of these during a recent research cruise off Australia on board the RV Kilo Moana (March 2007). The amphipod (the crustacean or shrimp-like animal) parasitizes an appendicularian (salp), and then eats the salp's body, leaving only the outside gelatinous house. The Phronima amphipod then lives in the house at depths of around 500 - 2000 m in the ocean, where it is a voracious predator. This bug was the inspiration for the Alien in the film series of the same name. For more information, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phronima

Big Fish Are Bad For You To Eat!

The ratio of plastic to zooplankton (marine life food) in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is 6 to 1. SIX TIMES the plastic in the water as there is zooplankton (that's what the fish eat)!!! The plastic is regularly mistaken for food and ingested by the marine life (and then ingested by us). While Grace visits her uncle she finds out how bad it is for her to eat some of the seafood she loves. Toxins like mercury, plastics, etc are ingested by fish and then by us. You can find a list of "good" and "bad" seafood at the Monterey Bay Aquarium "Seafood Watch" Website page: http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/SeafoodWatch.asp

Ocean Productivity - Blooms vs Latitude

In this segment, we explore the seasonal increases and decreases in phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass in equatorial, temperate, and polar latitudes.

Ocean Productivity - Seasonal Cycle Tropical Zones

Here we explore the seasonal cycle of phytoplankton and zooplankton productivity in tropical latitudes, which typically experience only minor fluctuations in abundance, due to the steady-state nature of their physical and chemical properties.

Pt. 1 "Plastic in the Ocean" Interview with Capt. Charles Moore

For over 10 years, the Algalita Marine Research Foundation has been studying the buildup of plastic debris in the North Pacific Ocean. Sherry Beall interviews Captain Charles Moore, founder, who has documented 6 times more plastic than zooplankton in surface waters of the North Pacific and other crucial information regarding the survival or our Oceans and Marine Life that we are so dependent upon.
