Hi Folks, Well after having recorded some of my tunes, it's time to tell about my "Masters" and to try to record my favorite tunes for lap steel guitar. The one and first that made me crazy about this instrument was discovered (by me) in the music of a beautiful film that took place in America, directed by a German, I mean "Paris Texas" of Wim Wenders. The music was composed by Ry Cooder, and his side man, was the guy playing the steel guitar: Mister David LINDLEY So this tune wasn't a part of "Paris Texas" OST. But it's for me one of the most beautiful song ever written for slide Guitar. I've try to record it tonight, it's far from perfect, but if you didn't know David Lindley, may be have I done good. So this tune was recorded on "Win This Record" one of his albums. If you like it go to hear the original version(far far better from my poor one). You have to know that he is a multi-instruments player (guitar, violin, bouzouki, lap steel, weissenborn...), and a wonderful guy. http://fredkinbom.com Here is a little lap steel arrangement of the song "Grimasch om morgonen" by the late Swedish genius Cornelis Vreeswijk. I wanted to make a little video showcasing the sound of my new "delrin" tone bar from Tribo-Tone, thought it'd be nice to do a Cornelis Vreeswijk song, and this is what I came up with. Played on my Lazy River Weissenborn-style guitar in G-minor tuning (but tuned down a bit lower than G). This new tone bar is really quiet (as in noise-free) on the strings. I realised when watching the video that I make some sliding noises on the strings with my hand, but I hope the sound of the bar comes across anyway! ;-) As most of you probably don't understand Swedish, I will make a literal translation of this beautiful lyric by this Dutch-born master of the Swedish language: "Now dew falls and sun rises But you can't hear that You're lying here without blouse and skirt With your lips against my ear 'Speak seriously now' you say, determined, 'You're laughing songs and singing jokes' 'You can - but you don't want to - make a song about the fragile happiness' Now sun rises and dew falls For poor people and for the rich But happiness has a poisonous thorn That one ought to carefully avoid She stays willingly for a few days But when you want to keep her Her eyes turn ice cold And you become bitter as bile So the dew falls without sound And grass and leaves become wet And each morning the sun stands as bride Although no wedding hymns are sounding Ann-Katarin, you should know that There is a happiness that dies from laughter But it wants to caress at night And it is still as water Step out of the bed, Ann-Katarin And listen to something important There is a special kind of fine wine That one must enjoy with caution Because if one drinks it recklessly It loses its former shine And you're left with an empty bottle And bitter tears and ashes." A beautiful and brand new custom baritone Weissenborn built by Paddy Burgin in Wellington, New Zealand. The scale length is 27.4" and it is made of solid Sapele with Rosewood bridge, fretboard, binding and headstock overlay and mother of pearl inlays. Thought I'd enjoy the last sunrays of the day and play some slide in my veranda, accompanied by some birds in the garden, bamboo chimes, a ringing phone and "Snowy", who clearly demonstrates what she thinks of my playing... I'm playing my "Daniel Brauchli" weissenborn style guitar; made of Tasmanian blackwood and cedar top. Tuning DADF#AD Do you hear the slide scratching over the strings : it means the guitar is breathing. Robert Wilkins recorded this song in 1930. This is a nice example of a thematic bluessong; all the verses contibute to the story and are not, as most bluessongs, loosely related with the subject. Robert Wilkins recorded it with a fingerpicked accompaniment in the key of A (John Miller has a dvd lesson on this song - it's also transcribed in Woody Mann's book "Six Black Guitarists". I chose to make a version on my Brauchli lap slide guitar, tuned to open G with a capo on the 5th fret. In the background you see a reproduction of a painting by Belgian Paul Delvaux; many of his paintings figure trains so I thought it would be an appropriate background.
