The Battle of Vimy Ridge
It was now the Canadians' turn to brave a maelstrom of razor-edged barbed wire, knee-deep mud, and withering machine-gun fire. Four days and 10,000 casualties later, the Canadians stun the world by seizing the ridge in one of the war's most successful and brilliantly planned offensives. With the Canadians now established as fighters of renown, the Canadian Corps under Currie found itself used increasingly as the shock troops of the allied forces, with the distinct irony of having the most professional army in the world so terrorized by the most "civilian." This video traces the Corp's adventures through the murderous Battle of the Somme, eventuating in the Canadian's signal achievement seizing the seemingly impregnable Vimy Ridge. The logistics of this battle which not only won renown for Canada, but also accomplished a fundamentally important strategic breakthrough of the German line are drawn in detail. Emphasized in the course of the story are some of the practices that gave Currie his reputation as a great general his meticulous preparation and rehearsal of every event; his concern for his men preferring to sacrifice equipment rather than soldiers; and his development of tactics ultimately imitated by the rest of the allied forces: the flexible platoon system, the "creeping barrage." We are made to realize as well that the war effort was represented by more than those going "over the top." Sympathetic glimpses are provided as well of the different elements of the combined Canadian effort: the flyers, the observers, the medical staff, the engineers and tunnel diggers; the work battalions. Among the most dramatic moments recounted is one of a battle saved by the heroism of one of those "non-combat units." This video is available for purchase at www.titlehousedistribution.com or www.amazon.com. |

The Soldiers of Vimy and of Afghanistan
On the 2007 anniversary of the Canadian victory in Vimy (France), Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave a speech in which he added that Canadian soldiers "still live in a dangerous world and, as prime minister, my thoughts these days are never far from Afghanistan." The comment drew fire from those who, for various reasons, believe that the commemoration of soldiers at Vimy should not be combined with a consideration of the soldiers currently fighting in Afghanistan. Chief among them were pacifists, who regard the commemoration of Vimy as the commemoration of nothing more than the deaths of thousands of Canadians, as though to imply that the successful effort at Vimy ought never to have been made. On April 16, 2007, FP's Paul McKeever and the MacKenzie Institute's John Thompson discussed the meaning of Vimy, and its relation to current efforts by Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan, and took aim at the pacifists, in particular. |

Vimy Ridge Footage
Footage from Vimy Ridge. Visit http://wwii.ca for more information on Canada at War. 3,500+ Canadians died taking the Ridge and 7,000 more were wounded. Previous French attacks came at a cost of 200,000 dead with little or no ground gained. The Canadians accomplished what was said to be "impossible" as the ridge was thought to be impregnable. |

The Battle of Vimy Ridge
Sam's Army, The Battle of Vimy Ridge (produced in 1997), and The Last 100 Days constitute a six hour three-part series on the First World War, the first television series telling the complete story of Canada's achievements in WWI. In Sam's Army, Canada was led to war by a bigoted, ignorant, self-obsessed Minister of Militia, who may well have been clinically insane, but the importance of Canada's contribution in that war owes a great deal to him. The man of course, was Colonel - later made Lieutenant General by his own hand - Sam Hughes. The Battle of Vimy Ridge is a two-hour television documentary which recreates for the viewer one of the greatest battles in Canadian military history. The film was made to show that Canadian character at its best, forging an identity for a country that before the First World War had been seen only as a British colony - an identity and a character that became recognized and respected throughout Europe. The other implausible story forms the heart of The Last 100 Days, namely that Canadian military accomplishments in the last hundred days of World War I, when the German Army was destroyed, surpassed those of any other army. Further, that the Canadian success was, in no small measure, due to Arthur Currie, whom a recent British historian describes as "the most successful Allied General and one of the least well known." The cinematic approach is similar to that used in No Price Too High, Norflicks' World War II series, and resembles Ken Burns' The Civil War. We say resemble because World War I gives us many more visual resources at our disposal than did The Civil War. Our method uses letters, speeches, articles and reports from the time read by actors who are not seen and who assume the character as well as the identity of the author of the written material. |

Vickers Vimy Flight by Brooklands Museum Volunteers 2008
Note: Also available in High-Def at http://www.vimeo.com/806366 (one day YouTube will do it) The idea to build a replica Vickers Vimy sprung from the fertile mind of Peter McMillan. He along with Lang Kidby flew it from Brooklands to Australia in 1994. Full details of this and its other historical flights can be found at vimy.org The aircraft is now operated by the Brooklands Museum Trust, with the assistance of Dunsfold Park and a team of enthusiastic volunteers. See brooklandsmuseum.com This short clip shows the first flight since 2005 which took place on the 19th March 2008-03-20 from near the Top Gear test site at Dunsfold . |
