Barack Obama rips Bush/Mccain Iraq-Afghanistan policy

I wanted to say a few words about al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). Bob Woodward claims in his new book "The War Within" that "groundbreaking" covert techniques, rather than the surge of conventional forces, have devastated AQI over the past year. This oversells the case, but there is no doubt that American special operations forces and intelligence agencies have become much more proficient at targeting AQI leadership and cadre. When I was in Iraq last month, I had the chance to speak with numerous military and intelligence analysts. Although they are reluctant to say so in public, there was near unanimity in private that al-Qaeda in Iraq has been "strategically defeated." What does this mean? It means that AQI remains capable of assassination, intimidation, and the occasional spectacular bombing, but the organization no longer poses a threat to the viability of the Iraqi government. Saturday's story in the Post noted these sentiments as well: "While AQI remains capable of staging deadly suicide bombings, its leaders are becoming reviled throughout the country and are hard-pressed to find sanctuary anywhere in Iraq, according to U.S. defense and intelligence officials." This is big news. The administration's claim that Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism has always been dubious, but now it is simply unsustainable. Of course, this didn't stop President Bush from reiterating the claim during his speech today at National Defense University, where he reminded us, "Al Qaida leaders have repeatedly declared that Iraq is the central front of their war with America." Yet, as Saturday's Post story notes: "The shift also is tacitly acknowledged inside al-Qaeda's base on the Afghan-Pakistan border, as Osama bin Laden has begun retooling his propaganda campaign to emphasize the conflict in Afghanistan instead of the failing effort in Iraq, the officials said. While there is little evidence that al-Qaeda is attempting to move fighters and resources from Iraq to Afghanistan, the Iraq conflict is no longer driving recruitment and donations for al-Qaeda as it did as recently as nine months ago, they said. Attacks inside Iraq by AQI, meanwhile, have dropped sharply, with 28 incidents and 125 civilian deaths reported in the first six months of this year, compared with 300 bombings and more than 1,500 deaths in 2007. "Iraq will always be a target that resonates for al-Qaeda, but we believe it will never again be the central front," said a U.S. counterterrorism analyst who was not authorized to speak on the record. "Their ability to affect what is going on in Iraq has been greatly diminished."" Iraq's Shia and Kurdish communities revile AQI, and the Sunni turn against AQI is unlikely to be reversed. "We don't see the Sunni community going back to al-Qaeda under any circumstances," a senior defense official told the Post. In this environment, the United States should be able to gather sufficient intelligence to effectively target AQI and prevent a safe haven from emerging in Iraq even as our troops draw down. We need to seize this opportunity to shift more resources to confront the challenge posed by Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Bush has announced the withdrawal of 8,000 U.S. forces (including one combat brigade) from Iraq by next March, and the deployment to Afghanistan of one additional Marine battalion in November and an Army brigade in January. Given the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, it is clear that more is needed. And the sooner the better. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/inteldump/2008/09/the_war_without.html

Obama Playing the Race Card: Hardball Panel Agrees

You might say nothing could be more unsurprising than a panel of political pundits admitting the obvious: that Barack Obama is playing the race card when he accuses John McCain of saying the Dem candidate "doesn't look like the other presidents on the currency." But what makes the punditry panel's unanimity notable is that no one would accuse them of being McCain backers, and what's more, that they turned up on Hardball. Surely Chris Matthews, were he not on vacation, would have found one diehard to deny reality. But with Mike Barnicle guest-hosting, a consensus of truth-telling broke out. Barnicle began by playing a clip of McCain, interviewed by CNN's John King, saying that it is legitimate to accuse Obama of having played the race card. The video is worth viewing if only to watch McCain end the interview by shaking a surprised King's hand and walking away. Then the panel commented. Perry Bacon of the Washington Post said he would decline to answer directly, but his answer left no real doubt as to his view.

Borderpass

The movement of man in time and space is a necessity. The liberty of his movement in space is equally proportional in respect of the direction of his movement, which does not include the case, where an obstacle is present. A man moving along an obstacle ( considering that it is in a straight line ) has the liberty of his movement limited by half. The movement to the other side is possible only by the presence of an opening in the obstacle, which in the moment of crossing limits the liberty of movement on the obligatory path, that on the contrary limits unanimity. Life on the territory of abstract borders has an impact on our everyday movement; even though the borders in this point of time seem almost invisible, as if virtual, the border crossing is ever present deep within us and becomes a metaphor for all our border crossings, which were crossed and ever will be crossed by us. The idea has a concrete meaning referring to the entry into the EU, having an eternal impact on our future.

Powaqqatsi : Life in Transformation - Opening

Official Site: http://www.koyaanisqatsi.org/films/powaqqatsi.php POWAQQATSI's overall focus is on natives of the Third World -- the emerging, land-based cultures of Asia, India, Africa, the Middle East and South America -- and how they express themselves through work and traditions. What it has to say about these cultures is an eyeful and then some, sculpted to allow for varied interpretations. Where KOYAANISQATSI dealt with the imbalance between nature and modern society, POWAQQATSI is a celebration of the human-scale endeavor the craftsmanship, spiritual worship, labor and creativity that defines a particular culture. It's also a celebration of rareness -- the delicate beauty in the eyes of an Indian child, the richness of a tapestry woven in Kathmandu -- and yet an observation of how these societies move to a universal drumbeat. POWAQQATSI is also about contrasting ways of life, and in part how the lure of mechanization and technology and the growth of mega-cities are having a negative effect on small-scale cultures. The title POWAQQATSI is a Hopi Indian conjunctive -- the word Powaqa, I which refers to a negative sorcerer who lives at the expense of others, and Qatsi --i.e., life. Several of "POWAQQATSI's" images point to a certain lethargy affecting its city dwellers. They could be the same faces we saw in the smaller villages but they seem numbed; their eyes reflect caution, uncertainty. And yet POWAQQATSI, says Reggio, is not a film about what should or shouldn't be. "It's an impression, an examination of how life is changing", he explains. "That's all it is. There is good and there is bad. What we sought to capture is our unanimity as a global culture. Most of us tend to forget about this, caught up as we are in our separate trajectories. It was fascinating to blend these different existences together in one film." To be certain, POWAQQATSI is a record of diversity and transformation, of cultures dying and prospering, of industry for its own sake and the fruits of individual labor, presented as an integrated human symphony -- and with Philip Glass' score providing the counterpart, performed with native, classical and electronic instruments, its tribal rhythms fused by a single majesterial theme.

DR Congo: Condom not yet fully accepted

The use condoms in the DR Congo capital Kinshasa is a subject that is far from getting unanimity among both the old and young generations. "During my youth the condom was non-existent. I will never use it", says a sixty-five year old man. Although the youth seem to be better educated, the use of the condom is not always as popular as many might think. It is still up to each and every individual to make a decision based on many factors, including past experiences

Both have succeeded in appealing to audiences far beyond the purely academic sphere, but only in their mutual rejection of "intellectualism" as final is there real unanimity. Although James was slightly ahead in the development and enunciation of his ideas, he confessed that he was baffled by many of Bergson's notions. James certainly neglected

When Mr. Adams, not satisfied even with this positive assurance, pressed for a categorical answer: "I asked him if I was to understand that policy as not now to be changed; he said: Yes!" John Morley's comment on this matter, in the "Life of Gladstone," forty years afterwards, would have

Considered the most important playwright of Brazil ever. The importance of his plays for Brazilians can be compared to Shakespeare's plays for Brits. He grew up in a family of journalists: son of journalist Mário Rodrigues, brother of journalist Mário Filho (Maracanã Stadium, in Rio, bears the name of his brother). Father of journalist Nelson Rodrigues Filho. The most famous supporter of club Fluminense of Rio. Wrote about soccer in the newspaper "Jornal dos Sports" and stories about families' conflicts of middle-class in "Última Hora", using a female nickname. Had all his plays censored by government. Famous because of polemics of his quotations. Son of Maria Esther Falcão and Mário Rodrigues (died in 1930). He was the fifth of 15 children. Siblings: Milton, Roberto (died in 1929), Mário Filho, Stella, Joffre (died in 1936), Maria Clara, Augustinho, Irene, Paulo (died in 1967), Helena, Dorinha, Elsinha and Dulcinha (died in 1927). Father, with Elza, of a boys named Joffre (b.1941) and Nelson. Father, with Lúcia Cruz Lima, of a girl named Daniela. Personal Quotes "Any unanimity is stupid". Born in Recife, the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, Nélson moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1916 when his father, Mário Rodrigues, purchased a house in Zona Norte, a poor suburb of the city. Mário Rodrigues found work in the carioca newspaper Correio da Manhã. In 1925 he started to work at A Manhã, a newspaper owned by his father. The following years were relatively happy for the Rodrigues family, until the murder of Roberto Rodrigues, Nélson's brother. After Roberto's death, Mário fell into a depression, passing away a few months later. In the Revolução de 30 the Rodrigues newspaper was destroyed by the revolutionary army. In 1932 Rodrigues got a job with O Globo, but was diagnosed with tuberculosis a year later. His treatment was financed by Roberto Marinho, who also paid Rodrigues's salary during his time away at Campos do Jordão. Rodrigues was also famous for his articles about soccer and specifically Fluminense—the Rio de Janeiro soccer team that he supported. Beginning in 1940 Rodrigues divided his time between his job at O Globo and his personal work as dramatist. His first play debuted in 1941, A Mulher Sem Pecado (English: The Woman Without Sin). It was a fiasco, but his second play, Vestido de Noiva (English: Wedding Dress or Dress of a Bride) was more successful. By the 1940s he had invented a character, Suzana Flag, to write novels.

USA IS A CORPORATION !! 2 CONSTITUTIONS !!

ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CONT... It is worth notice, therefore, that in the St. Gall manuscript the Angles do not appear as slave boys exposed for sale, but as men visiting Rome of their own free will, whom Gregory expressed a desire to see. It is Venerable Bede (Hist. Eccl., II, i) who first makes them slaves. In consequence of this meeting Gregory was so fixed with desire to convert the Angles that he obtained permission from Pelagius II to go in person to Britain with some of his fellow-monks as missionaries. The Romans, however, were greatly incensed at the pope's act. With angry words they demanded Gregory's recall, and messengers were at once dispatched to bring him back to Rome, if necessary by force. These men caught up with the little band of missionaries on the third day after their departure, and at once returned with them, Gregory offering no opposition, since he had received what appeared to him as a sign from heaven that his enterprise should be abandoned. The strong feeling of the Roman populace that Gregory must not be allowed to leave Rome is a sufficient proof of the position he now held there. He was in fact the chief adviser and assistant of Pelagius II, towards whom he seems to have acted very much in the capacity of secretary (see the letter of the Bishop of Ravenna to Gregory, Epp., III, lxvi, "Sedem apostolicam, quam antae moribus nunc etiam honore debito gubernatis"). In this capacity, probably in 586, Gregory wrote his important letter to the schismatical bishops of Istria who had separated from communion with the Church on the question of the Three Chapters (Epp., Appendix, III, iii). This document, which is almost a treatise in length, is an admirable example of Gregory's skill, but it failed to produce any more effort than Pelagius's two previous letters had, and the schism continued. The year 589 was one of widespread disaster throughout all the empire. In Italy there was an unprecedented inundation. Farms and houses were carried away by the floods. The Tiber overflowed its banks, destroying numerous buildings, among them the granaries of the Church with all the store of corn. Pestilence followed on the floods, and Rome became a very city of the dead. Business was at a standstill, and the streets were deserted save for the wagons which bore forth countless corpses for burial in common pits beyond the city walls. Then, in February, 590, as if to fill the cup of misery to the brim, Pelagius II died. The choice of a successor lay with the clergy and people of Rome, and without any hesitation they elected Gregory, Abbot of St. Andrew's. In spite of their unanimity Gregory shrank from the dignity thus offered him. He knew, no doubt, that its acceptance meant a final good-bye to the cloister life he loved, and so he not only refused to accede to the prayers of his fellow citizens but also wrote personally to the Emperor Maurice, begging him with all earnestness not to confirm the election. Germanus, prefect of the city, suppresses this letter, however, and sent instead of it the formal schedule of the election. In the interval while awaiting the emperor's reply the business of the vacant see was transacted by Gregory, in commission with two or three other high officials. As the plague still continued unabated, Gregory called upon the people to join in a vast sevenfold procession which was to start from each of the seven regions of the city and meet at the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin, all praying the while for pardon and the withdrawal of the pestilence. This was accordingly done, and the memory of the event is still preserved by the name "Sant' Angelo" given to the mausoleum of Hadrian from the legend that the Archangel St. Michael was seen upon its summit in the act of sheathing his sword as a sign that the plague was over. At length, after six months of waiting, came the emperor's confirmation of Gregory's election. The saint was terrified at the news and even meditated flight. He was seized, however, carried to the Basilica of St. Peter, and there consecrated pope on 3 September, 590. The story that Gregory actually fled the city and remained hidden in a forest for three days, when his whereabouts was revealed by a supernatural light, seems to be pure invention. It appears for the first time in the Whitby life (c. vii), and is directly contrary to the words of his contemporary, Gregory of Tours (Hist. Franc., X, i). Still he never ceased to regret his elevation, and his later writings contain numberless expressions of strong feeling on this point.

GUTENBERG13928-8 #86 Plays, Acting and Music A Book Of Theory

The Project Gutenberg EBook of Plays, Acting and Music, by Arthur SymonsIn "Les Deux Ecoles" the philosophy which could be discerned in "La Veine," that of taking things as they are and taking them comfortably, is carried to a still further development. I am prepared to be told that the whole philosophy is horribly immoral; perhaps it is; but the play, certainly, is not. It is vastly amusing, its naughtiness is so na, so tactfully frank, that even the American daughter might take her mother to see it, without fear of corrupting the innocence of age. "On peut trbien vivre sans e la plus heureuse des femmes": that is one of the morals of the piece; and, the more you think over questions of conduct, the more you realise that you might just as well not have thought about them at all, might be another. The incidents by which these excellent morals are driven home are incidents of the same order as those in "La Veine," and not less entertaining. The mounting, simple as it was, was admirably planned; the stage-pictures full of explicit drollery. And, as before, the whole company worked with the effortless unanimity of a perfect piece of machinery. A few days after seeing "La Veine" I went to Wyndham's Theatre to see a
