6) "Tsukiji Fish Market" is a huge wholesale fish market in the city of Tokyo that supplies fish and seafood for most of the restaurants and food markets in much of Japan. I found a taxi at about five in the morning while suffering from jet lag. As you can hear in the recording, it was raining profusely and very windy. A typhoon was brushing the western coast of Japan at the time. Visitors were expected to get out of the way of the many four-wheeled vehicles moving crates and boxes of fish. The sound track is a multi-track soundscape collage.

Quelques personnes se demandent pourquoi il a fallu attendre plusieurs semaines la sortie d'un nouvel épisode de Pocket Japan, normalement hebdomadaire. En même temps, ceux qui me connaissent savent que c'est un cas de force majeure qui m'a empêché de publier quoi que ce soit, une de ces situations qui vous font tout laisser de côté pendant un temps de silence. Ce temps-là est aujourd'hui terminé, et vous retrouverez dans cet épisode la fin de la visite du marché de Tsukiji, le plus grand marché aux poissons du monde. Je n'étais pas un grand amateur de poisson avant de me retrouver au Japon, et aujourd'hui je ne me lasse pas de revisionner les images de ce grand "bazar de la mer"... Une visite qui se termine par ce qui est sans doute le meilleur petit-déjeuner du monde : des maki, des sushi, du thon, de l'oursin, de l'anguille, du thé et de la soupe miso ! Et au passage, un clin d'oeil à un court-métrage de l'excellente série Ghiblies... On n'est jamais bien loin d'un temple au Japon, et je profite de m'être perdu à Tsukiji pour visiter le petit Namiyoke-Jinja, petit havre de sérénité au milieu du tumulte du marché. Quelques stations de métro plus loin, et voilà Asakusa, un des quartiers les plus intéressants de Tôkyô. Mais c'est le prochain épisode qui vous en dévoilera davantage... I had some time to kill before going to Kabuki in the Ginza, so I visited the Tsukiji (fish market) Honganji temple and was treated to a Gagaku performance.

I spent the day, or rather I should say night into morning at Tsukiji Market. I think I still smell like fish with the amount of gore I got on me. There were a lot of great experiences and while i had about 2 hours of footage I finally got it down to the appropriate 10 minute YouTube limit. Kind of hard to explain it all, so I hope it makes sense. I was lucky to be a part of some of the behind the scenes stuff as I was there in a work capacity for another job. So, no... they probably wont let you do some of the stuff I was lucky enough to get to do. But many parts of the market are open to the public including the Tuna auction, and some parts of the wholesale market area. I highly recommend a visit if you are ever in Tokyo.
