Handle with care: Undercover campaign film
DID YOU KNOW? Live transport causes suffering on a massive scale: more than 1,000,000,000 animals are transported every single week, many on unnecessary and long journeys. TAKE ACTION: www.handlewithcare.tv Every week, hundreds of millions of farm animals endure journeys lasting hours, days, weeks or months, in cramped conditions on their way to slaughter. They experience stress and exhaustion, rough handling, hunger and thirst, extreme temperatures and unsanitary conditions as they are transported live across the world. As a result, the animals suffer horrific injuries, diseases are spread and many die before reaching their destination. We already have the technology to transport fresh chilled and frozen meat and the science to prove the welfare benefits of local, humane slaughter. For these reasons, long distance transport is not only cruel, it is unnecessary. |

COAST GUARD SAVES NINE LIVES FROM HEAVY SEAS
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Coast Guard rescued nine people today from three sailboats off the coast of North Carolina. A Coast Guard HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew based out of Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., landed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point with the latest survivors, who were plucked from their sailboat about 120 miles off shore. This was Air Station Elizabeth City's third rescue today. A rescue helicopter crew hoisted three people from the sailboat Seaker at approximately 7:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Diamond Shoals, N.C. The air crew transported the rescued to Air Station Elizabeth City where they were evaluated by medical crews and released. In addition to the Seaker rescue, three people were rescued from a makeshift life raft about 160 nautical miles east of Cape Hatteras in 34-foot seas. They were aboard the sailboat Lou Pantai when rough seas and heavy winds forced the three sailors to abandon ship. A Coast Guard helicopter crew transported the rescued to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. The sailors are suffering from hypothermia. |

BBtv WORLD: Roots of Voudun and Slavery's Legacy in Ouidah
BBtv online: http://tv.boingboing.net Today's Boing Boing tv is an installment of our ongoing BBtv WORLD series, in which we bring you first-person glimpses of life around the globe. From the 17th to 19th centuries, millions of African people were sold into slavery, transported on ships to the Americas. With them came spiritual traditions including Voudun, which we now know as voodoo. Its roots are in the Dahomey kingdom on the West Coast of Africa, now the country of Benin. In todays episode, I travel to Benins port city of Ouidah, one of the most important slave trade ports, and a center of the Vodoun religion. We visit the Temple of Pythons and learn about Voudun religious practices, and witness some of the most important sites in the history of the slave trade. We walk along a beach that was the single most highly-trafficked embarkation point for West African slaves headed over the Atlantic to the Americas. One million people were forced on to ships here, many transported to Haiti and Brazil, where Voudun transmuted into voodoo and Candomblé. Outsiders called this region the Slave Coast. Ouidah's residents today call the former boarding platform on this otherwise idyllic beach the Gate of No Return. -- XJ |

SS-21 SCARAB 9K79 Tochka FROG-7 Luna
The SS-21 SCARAB (9K79 Tochka) single-stage, short-range, tactical-ballistic missile is transported and fired from the 9P129 6x6 wheeled transporter erector launcher. It is supported by a tactical transloader (9T218) and a 9T238 missile transporter trailer towed by a ZIL-131 truck. The 9P129 TEL crew compartment is in the forward section and the missile compartment behind. During transport the missile is enclosed with the warhead in a temperature-controlled casing. The SS-21 SCARAB missile (9M79) has a maximum range of 70 km and a CEP of 160 meters, while the improved composite propellant 9M79-1 (Tochka-U) has a maximum range of 120 km. The basic warhead is the 9N123F HE-Frag warhead which has 120 kg of high explosives. The 9N123K submunition warhead can probably carry either bomblets or mines. The SS-21 can also carry the AA60 tactical nuclear warhead. Other warheads are believed to include chemical, terminally guided warhead, and a smart-munition bomblet warhead. In 1981, the SS-21, a guided missile (providing improvement in both range and accuracy), began replacing the FROG in forward-deployed divisions, and 140 are were deployed as of 1988. Division-level SS-21 battalions were being consolidated into brigades in Soviet armies in East Germany. |

PITCH BLACK part 1
Lightyears in space, the space transport shuttle 'Hunter-Gratzner' is met with a deadly meteor shower and crash lands on a baron wasteland with absolutely no life in sight. After their captain dies from a 'fatal impact' upon crash landing, second-in-command Carolyn Fry assumes responsibility of the ten survivors who managed to escape the wreck with their lives, but the death of her captain has her mind deeply troubled and she lacks the will to help the people in need of her assistance. Among these survivors is Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous criminal who was being transported to another prison colony by bounty hunter William Johns but managed to escape after the wreck. After Riddick is recaptured, following the mutilation of colonist Zeke, everyone assumes that he's responsible and after doing a little more investigating, the survivors realize that the colonists who lived on the planet didn't leave or vanish at all: they were eaten by a pack of carnivorous (sometimes cannibalistic) raptors, nocturnal creatures who can't stand the light and so must stay below the surface to avoid getting scorched. Johns assumes that if the raptors are phobic about the daylight, then all they have to do is stick to three suns shining their light on the planet and they'll be fine until an 'evac' arrives. That's easier said than done when Fry examines a solar system model and discovers that the planet they're on falls into a total eclipse every twenty two years and when the lights go out, the raptors will come to surface to feast on whoever is on their homeworld. With tensions mounting, trust dwindling and people dying left and right, Fry and the others launch a plan to find an escape shuttle to try and escape the planet in one piece: but to do so, they'll need Riddick's surgically enhanced eyes to see and guide them through the darkness. But the question is, can Riddick be trusted? And can they hold together long enough to avoid becoming the raptors' next meal? |

173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team pt. 1/2
A Dutch reporter embedded with American troops from 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team (ABCT). Documentary: Hunting for Taliban In this award-winning documentary we follow reporter Tom Kleijn and Joris Hentenaar, who were embedded for 2 1/2 weeks with an American unit searching for Taliban fighters in the vast mountain area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They traveled with an American military transport from Kabul to the large American base in Kandahar and subsequently to an advance post in the hills. From there the two joined a unit that was eventually dropped in the mountains, in the same area Dutch commandos are active. The journalists spent a total of five days and four nights with the soldiers hunting for the Taliban. The hunt took place on foot, from village to village, door to door. They witnessed a brief exchange of fire that led to the elimination of a possible Taliban fighter who had taken cover in a cave a large distance away. They also saw two men being captured, who were blindfolded and transported back to the base by helicopter. The documentary is the account of the long, difficult hunt for invisible Taliban fighters. The viewer sees mostly powerlessness. The powerlessness of a superpower that can occupy a country but can't win the war. The powerlessness of a soldier who fights an invisible enemy. The powerlessness of the ordinary Afghan, who runs the risk of being taken in by American commandos one day and the next day must fear execution at the hands of the Taliban. The soldiers of the unit tell the journalists among other things about the usefulness of their work, about how it feels to kill people and about the way they view their enemies. |

Austrailia to Middle East: live transport of animals Pt: 2/2
Raised on large, remote farms, Australian sheep enjoy space to roam and very little human contact. But due to Australia's live export industry, millions of Australian sheep suffer a fate far worse than death every year. They are destined for a horrific journey to slaughter overseas - herded onto a packed truck and driven across the country, sometimes in scorching heat. It's then onto a ship where conditions are much worse. They're terrified and will spend up to three weeks on the crowded ship. With around three sheep to one metre square, there is little room to move and an unfamiliar diet of pellets means many animals may not eat for the entire journey. Stress, heat-exhaustion, injury and disease result in the death of around 1,000 sheep on each ship of 100,000. Those that survive the journey arrive in countries with no or unenforced animal welfare legislation where they are often transported, handled and slaughtered in the most barbaric way. It's just cruel. It's also completely unnecessary. Australia already exports chilled meat to many countries it sends live animals to. Replacing live export with a growth in the trade of chilled meat, humanely killed as close to the farm as possible, will benefit both animals and Australia. |
