However, UTIs may be a symptom of a more serious condition known as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). VUR is a pediatric condition that causes urine to flow backwards from the bladder back up to the kidneys, through one or both of the ureters. Although VUR may resolve over time, it can be very serious. When left untreated, infected urine flows back into the kidney and this can lead to kidney infections. With time, this can also lead to scarring, poor kidney function and high blood pressure. The most common treatment for VUR is long-term, preventative antibiotics.
