Nara Japan is located east of Osaka, and south of Kyoto in the Kansai region of Japan. Nara was for a time Japan's Capital city from 710 to 784. Nara is known for it's wild deer population and historical landmarks including Todai-ji. A large temple that once held great political influence over Japan. Although only 2/3's the size of the original, ruined in fire twice, it remains the largest wooden structure on Earth. The temple houses Daibutsu, or Large Buddha, and at 14.98m (16.3ft) tall. It is even larger than the Buddha at Kamakura. And cast out of only 8 pieces. On August 15th 2008, we attended Setsubun Lantern Festival, and the only night in the year the doors the Great Buddha looks out from are opened. And finally Daimonji Okuribi is when the kanji 大, meaning large, is lit into a mountain side. Which is similar, but reportedly larger than the Daimonji of Kyoto lit the next night.

The Todaiji Temple locates in the city of Nara. It was built in the Nara period ( 710-784 AD).The building is the largest wooden structure in the world.

In 752, The inaugural ceremony of Great Buddha, or opening eye of the Great Buddha was held, with 10,000 priests and laymen present. Many of them were invited from Korea, China and India. The reigning Empress Kôken, retired emperor Shômu and his wife, the former empress Komyô were present in the ceremony. Indian Priest Bodai Senna ( In Japanese ) worked as a master of ceremony. Other temple buildings were built one after another until 789.

奈良、東大寺の正門にあたる南大門は1180年に焼失した後、1199年に再建された。 浄土寺浄土堂と並んで中国から導入された天竺様という建築様式でつくられた貴重な遺構である。 The Great South Gate which is a front gate in Todai-ji Temple,Nara was reconstructed in 1199 after burned down in 1180. It is the valuable ruins which were made with style of building, Tenjikuyou who was introduced from China as well as the Joudo-ji Temple Joudodo.
