Supercooling experiment
After some trial and error, I finally managed to produced some supercooled water. This is the third time I have done this, but the first on film. Supercooling is where purified or distilled water is chilled to 32 degrees (F) or below, but remains in a liquid state. But, if you agitate the liquid i.e. shaking it, the water will become ice instantly. The technique I used was to place a bottle of Fiji water in a insulated thermos and let it chill for 5-6 hours in the freezer. The thermos slows the heat exchange, allowing the water to be evenly chilled. |

Vitamin Water Supercooling - Instant Freezing in seconds!
The way it works is that a Pure-ish liquid is cooled for about 2 hours in a freezer below 32°F or 0°C. Pure-er liquids lack a crystals nucleus. When thathappens, the liquid can go down to where crystal homogeneous nucleation occurs. A.K.A - crystalization(freezing). To make it freeze, just add a crystal nucleus. That is done by shaking, disturbing the liquid, adding something im-pure (anything with a nucleus), or adding a crystal(ice). Then it freezes in a chain reaction.this also happens when you superheat a pure liquid. that is done with radio waves(microwave) and when microwaving a liquid that is pure (without a nucleus) it goes above its boiling point with out turning to a gas. Then to activate it, add something impure, like sugar, and the liquid will instantly boil with a violent reaction. aka (exploding water). this more dangerous to do, that is why i dont have a video of that yet, i dont have the safty equipment to do it. |

This was an earlier attempt at supercooling. The second one, actually. It did not turn out like it was suppose to. Hilarity ensues. |

Supercooling Beer
This is the real deal, no tricks, no special mixture just beer... You can do it with water aswell but it works best in a glass bottle. You need to put it in the freezer for about 3 and a half hours and make sure you dont knock the freezer or the vibrations will make it not work, frost-free freezers don't normally work because they have a fan in them that vibrates. After 3 and a half hours, take the beer out carfully and then bang it down on a hard surface. The Sciency Bit... Even though the liquid is below its freezing temperature it reamains a liquid because a 'starter' ice crystal doesn't form because you have kept it very still. When you bang the beer on the table it adgitates the liquid starting the chain reaction where the ice crystals start to grow around the 'starter' crystal. This is called Supercooling. Well at least i think thats how it works... =S |

____________________________ I've put two sealed mineral water bottles in the freezer. The following morning one was completely frozen, the other was still liquid. I've softly extracted it from the freezer. I've laid it on the table and I've hit it and it have immediately become ice, then it have unfrozen a few minutes later. If you are interested in the phenomenon look at the Wikipedia: - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercooled Use distilled water (not tap water) since it works with pure liquids. Anyway, it can also work with other liquids (with less chances) After the experiment you can easy drink the water. Only use plastic bottles and don't try it with glass bottles, since, if the water didn't remain liquid (but it froze), the increasing of volume could burst the bottle (inside the freezer). Make the bottles cold in perfect calmness: don't open and close the freezer, set it at not too low temperatures and leave the bottles in for a long time. Finally, remember: it is a matter of chance. The water could remain liquid as in the video (and as soon as you hit it, it freezes), or it could freeze (and the experiment fails). |

supercooling (REAL)
This project requires only three things, freezer, water, and patience. Put the bottle of water (Fiji works best) in the freezer for around 2 hours for best results and then you can do many things from there. You can hit the bottle, you can pour it out, you can add snow to it, or any other way to disturb the purification in the bottle you can think of. ***THIS IS A SCHOOL PROJECT FOR MY SPEECH CLASS, IN WHICH I HAVE TO MAKE A "HOW TO..."
