Subduction at Tonga

This is a 3D visualization of the Tonga subduction zone in the South Pacific. The subducting oceanic crust is blue and earthquakes are colored cubes. The red pyramid marks the epicenter of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake that happened on May 3 2006. The Tonga subduction zone is the most seismically active region on Earth. The structure of the subsurface was created by analyzing the sounds that earthquakes make, this is the science of seismic tomography. The same principal is used in ultrasound imaging, just that the wavelength of the sound waves is much longer in earthquakes 5 to 15 Hz compared with 200,000 Hz in ultrasound imaging. The 3D visualization was created by the SIO Visualization Center at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Data and imagery is free for educational purposes, so long as you read the following Legal Disclaimer: http://siovizcenter.ucsd.edu/library/objects/MBARI_readme.txt

Rock composition of a subduction zone

Rock composition of a subduction zone This Canadian Series was made in 1976 - Understanding the Earth by TV Ontario. This series was part of a extension course at Laurentian, i believe from 1976 to 1986. The complete oceanic geology lesson can be found @ http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=0DE071561B50B713

Hi, I forgot to mention we're Subduction Zone. Please rate our video

Subduction

This the project I`ve been working on this week, hope you`all enjoy! Oh! If anyone can think of some lyric for this..bring`em on! For stereo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqN1Plw3beM&fmt=18 ---------------------------

Subduction outtakes Part 1

Hey everyone! It's 7cheeses and this movie is a six weeks science project that we had to do on plate tectonics!$@#%$#@% The movie is about Subduction which is when one plate goes under another plate. soooo yeah i think its really funny and informative too :D. yeah maybe we'll get extra credit!! :o

Mountains

Educational animation about how mountains are formed.

Subduction Zone - Paranoid - Live at GLHS 2008

Subducton Zone covers Black Sabbath's "Paranoid".

Elastic Rebound in a Subduction Zone

Oblique view of a highly generalized animation of a subduction zone where an oceanic plate is subducting beneath a continental plate. (See sketch below for parts.) This scenario can happen repeatedly on a 100-500 year cycle. The process which produces a mega-thrust earthquake would generate a tsunami, not depicted here. funny!!!!

subduction video-with mr. byron

my science tacher made up this dance to help us remember what it meant.

The Initiation of Subduction at an Old Fracture Zone (2002)

Caltech postdoc Chad Hall, working with Dr. Michael Gurnis and Luc Lavier, has recently discovered a mechanism for initiating an entirely new subduction zone, perhaps the most important unsolved problem in plate tectonics. Read more at http://www.gps.caltech.edu/~gurnis/Movies/Science_Captions/subduction_initiation.html
