Our plane lands on Spitsbergen July 14 2006

De Groningse bioloog dr. Maarten Loonen doet al bijna twintig jaar onderzoek op het Noorse pooleiland Spitsbergen. Iedere zomer is hij een paar maanden in het meest Noordelijke dorp ter wereld, Ny-Ålesund. Zijn onderzoek past in een onderzoekstraditie van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, van onderzoek aan ganzen, zowel in Nederland als langs de trekroute (van Afrika tot en met de poolcirkel) en in de arctische gebieden. Maarten Loonen bestudeerde de invloed door overbegrazing van ganzen op de kwetsbare pooltoendra's. Hij ontdekte ook dat de populatie poolvossen in zijn gebied invloed heeft op het aantal ganzen. Hongerige poolvossen op zoek naar eten voor hun jongen, doen zich te goed aan de eieren en de jongen van de ganzen. In Adams Appel vertelt Loonen over zijn onderzoek en laat hij unieke beelden van de poolvossen op Spitsbergen zien.

Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of mainland Europe, about midway between Norway and the North Pole. It consists of a group of islands ranging from 74° to 81° North, and 10° to 35° East. The archipelago is the northernmost part of Norway. Three islands are populated: Spitsbergen, Bear Island and Hopen. The largest settlement is Longyearbyen. The Svalbard Treaty recognises Norwegian sovereignty over Svalbard and the 1925 Svalbard Act makes Svalbard a full part of the Norwegian Kingdom.
