La tension est montée d'un cran cette semaine dans plusieurs villes du gouvernorat de Gafsa, dans le sud-ouest tunisien, lorsque des manifestations pour l'emploi et de meilleures conditions de vie ont dégénéré, la colère gronde dans cette région très touchée par le chômage. Les événements se sont précipités cette semaine lorsque les manifestations se sont transformées en opération policière. Aujourd'hui, Redeyef, ville située à près de 60 km de Gafsa et point de départ des premières révoltes. Cette semaine a été mouvementée. Cependant, la révolte sociale gronde depuis quatre mois déjà dans le bassin minier de Gafsa. Tout a commencé le 5 janvier dernier lors de la publication des résultats du concours d'entrée organisé par la Compagnie de phosphate de Gafsa, le principal employeur de la région. Les résultats étaient « entachés de fraudes évidentes, de favoritisme et de népotisme », indiquent plusieurs communiqués de presse des associations de travailleurs et de défense des droits de l'homme. Depuis, de nombreuses manifestions de protestation et des grèves ont éclaté dans plusieurs secteurs d'activité. Jeunes diplômés, femmes au foyer, syndicalistes, enseignants, sympathisants y ont participé « toutes générations confondues »!! L'agitation sociale a atteint son paroxysme cette semaine lorsque des centaines de manifestants se sont retrouvés encerclés par les forces de l'ordre à Redeyef. Selon plusieurs sources, la ville était assiégée depuis lundi! Les causes de la révolte sont plus profondes dans le gouvernorat de Gafsa, où le phosphate est bien l'une des rares richesses du gouvernorat de Gafsa. Le taux de chômage y est nettement supérieur à la moyenne nationale. Elle atteint jusqu'à 40% dans certaines zones (26,7% à Redeyef ; 38,5% à Oum Lârayes) contre une moyenne nationale qui s'établit à 14,1% en 2007. Les jeunes diplômés sont les plus touchés par ce fléau, Alors quand on leur a appris que la plupart d'entre eux n'étaient pas recrutés, ils se sont sentis révoltés!! Mais les jeunes ne sont pas les seuls à se plaindre. Aujourd'hui, la région du sud-ouest tunisien est l'une des plus oubliées du pays. Les zones côtières et le nord sont favorisés au détriment des autres territoires. Résorber le chômage reste donc l'une des revendications les plus fortes. Outre la demande d'annulation des résultats du concours, les revendications portent aussi sur un programme d'embauche des diplômés sans emploi à travers une implication accrue de l'Etat tunisien dans la création de grands projets industriels et davantage de fonds alloués au développement de la région. Mais les autorités font la sourde oreille... pour l'instant. Greatest ending ever! Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (À bout de souffle; literally "out of breath". Godard's first feature-length film is one of the inaugural and best-known films of the French New Wave. He wrote it with fellow New Wave director, François Truffaut, and released it the year after Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Alain Resnais's Hiroshima, Mon Amour. Together the three films brought international acclaim to the New Wave. Michel's death scene is one of the most iconic scenes in the film, but the film's final lines of dialogue are the source of some confusion for English-speaking audiences. In some translations, it is unclear whether Michel is condemning Patricia, or alternatively condemning the world in general. As Patricia and Detective Vital catch up with the dying Michel, there is the following exchange, according to the transcript published in Dudley Andrew's book on the film: MICHEL: C'est vraiment dégueulasse. PATRICIA: Qu'est ce qu'il a dit? VITAL: Il a dit que vous êtes "une dégueulasse". PATRICIA: Qu'est ce que c'est "dégueulasse"? In his book, Andrew translates the dialogue thus: MICHEL: That's really disgusting. PATRICIA: What did he say? VITAL: He said, "You are really a bitch." PATRICIA: What is "déguelasse" [bitch]? Andrew's translation obscures the point of the original French, which is that policeman Vital misquotes Michel. This could either be bad intention or due to a mishearing on part of Vital. A mishearing could stem in part from the similarity between Michel's first word, "C'est" (It is/That is) and the word "T'es" (You are), which are hard to distinguish audibly. In this case, it could also stem from the ambiguity of the word "dégueulasse", which can either be an adjective ("disgusting"), or a noun ("disgusting thing", rendered as 'bitch' by Andrew); however, even "vous êtes vraiment dégueulasse" (you are really disgusting) would have had the same meaning, without any change of adjective and noun. By hearing "T'es", Vital may understand Michel's line as a condemnation of Patricia, but if, in fact, Michel says "C'est", he could be referring to his situation in general, and not specifically blaming Patricia. Other translations have made Vital's misquotation more obvious. In the English captioning of the 2001 Fox-Lorber Region One DVD, "déguelasse" is translated as "scumbag", producing the following dialogue: MICHEL: It's a real scumbag. PATRICIA: What did he say? VITAL: He said, "You're a real scumbag". PATRICIA: What's a scumbag? The 2007 Criterion Collection Region One DVD uses a less literal translation that renders the French into a familiar American colloquialism: MICHEL: Makes me want to puke. PATRICIA: What did he say? VITAL: He said you make him want to puke. PATRICIA: What's that mean, "puke"?
