Falling stock markets, rising unemployment and soaring oil prices. The world's biggest economy is on the slippery slope to recession. The US economy has suffered massively. Oil has increased to a record $139 a barrel, the dollar has slumped, and as a result, share prices have plummeted. Worse still, George Bush, the US president, has announced the monthly US unemployment rate has taken its biggest leap in two decades.  Rob Reynolds reports.

For example, to convert the equation x -- 3y = -12 to y = mx + b form, the first step is to subtract x from both sides to get --3y = -x -- 12. Notice that the x term is positioned before the number on the right side of the equation so that the equation will eventually match up with y = mx + b form. Next, divide both sides by --3 to get y = 1/3 x + 4. Now the problem is in y = mx + b form, with m = 1/3 and b = 4, and the line can be graphed using the slope and y-intercept.

Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b form, where m represents the slope, and b represents the y-intercept. So if the equation of a line is y = 3/4 x -- 2, then the line is written in y = mx + b form, with m = 3/4 and b = -2. To graph the line, start with the y-intercept, or b, of --2. From there, take the slope, or m, of 3/4, plot a second point, and graph the line.

Episode "A slippery Slope" Pt. 1

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/algebra1/graphingslope.php Students learn to graph a line using a given point and slope by first plotting the given point, then taking the given slope (rise over run) from the given point, plotting a second point, and connecting the points with a line. Students also learn that the x-intercept is the point where the line crosses the x-axis, and the y-intercept is the point where the line crosses the y-axis. And if the given slope is an integer, such as 5, it can be thought of as 5/1, so that it can be read as rise over run.

Quite quick and easy, and the most versatile of all methods is the slope-intercpet method. This is the 12th of 15 videos about graphing equations. The other three series are "Solving Equations", "Word Problems" and "Factoring".

Battling 25-35 mph winds with higher gusts, I take the tiny Firebird Phantom to the highest hill in Iowa and test it's "slope soaring" (wind gliding) ability.
