The highlight of our 2006 Romania trip was visiting the pottery studio "Atelierul de Ceramica Colibaba" inside the Ethnographic Museum in Radauti, Romania. For many generations, members of the Colibaba family have made a distinctive type of folk pottery, characterised by sgraffito decoration through a layer of white slip, exposing the red clay beneath. The yellow, green and brown glazes that highlight the carved designs are very warm and beautiful. This traditional style of folk pottery from Bucovina is known as "Ceramica de Cuty", often spelled "Kuty" outside of Romania.

"The Romanians have preserved their national being and their specific civilization and they evolved their own highly original tradition, an ancient tradition, coming down from the Neolithic, developed by the Dacians and then enriched by the Greco-Roman world and the Byzantine one. Outstanding artworks with an archaic decoration featuring anthropomorphic, zoomorphic (the snake, the horse, the bird) and vegetal elements (the wheat ear, the fir tree, the tree of life) or else geometrical elements that once had sacred meanings related to fecundity and fertility rites. In Romania pottery has a millennial tradition, the museums boasting most valuable items dating back to the Neolithic. Evidence are the two anthropomorphic statuettes unearthed at Cernavoda and considered masterpieces, the Thinker and his spouse, as well as the famous Cucuteni painted earthenware. In 40 of the onetime 300 earthenware centers, potters still use traditional techniques to craft glazed or unglazed, red or black ware, decorated with sgraffito or with applied colors, usually red, black, brown, yellow, green and white. It is superb by its simplicity, natural pigments and very ancient, cosmogonic style of decoration (spirals, concentric circles, wavey patterns) steeped in traditions of previous millenia . "

I finished carving the piece.

This is painting #4 ,"An Artistical Research" from the square series, made between 2005 and 2006. For this mixed technique artwork I used a cotton shirt, carved blocks of wood, round piece of plastic and rope. Everything is mounted on canvas stretched on a light board using screws and bolts.The theme of this artistical research is obvious the square so the square shirt, the square blocks of carved wood and the canvas were previous prepared before being painted with oil and acrylics and as result, the artwork is hard-as-stone to touch. Is a painting and a sculpture in the same time, a basso-relief artwork.I used also the technique called sgraffito for enlighting some areas.I didn't try to hide the screws and bolts, they enhancing the technical-mechanical effect of surprise yet contemporary.Some of the squares are pure graphical studies of color values and texture. This unique artwork want to be touched. The dominant cold color used is seasoned with small islands of warm colors. The austerity of the squares is softened by the round piece of plastic, that's the ultimate provocation for eye and mind, but in the same time it is the WHEEL of CREATIVITY, the symbol of the idea that fight to evolve. Zwitserland is meertalig, Duits, Frans, Italiaans en het Rhätoromaans zijn de belangrijkste talen. Onze reis begint in het Franstalige Génève en loopt door het Rhônedal over de Furka- en Oberalppas naar de eindbestemming, de 4000 meter hoge Piz Bernina in Graubünden. Onderweg zien we de historische locomotief Weisshorn opstomen richting Zermatt en volgen we het tracé van de Glacier Express, dwars door het hooggebergte met z'n bekende alpenflora en fauna. Ook hebben we een afspraak met Peter Buzzetti die ons de fijne kneepjes van het sgraffito vak zal laten zien. We bezoeken de kuurbaden in Bad Scuol en de kastanjeoogst in Castasegna. Na het winterleven in Sankt Moritz vertrekken we met de Bernina Express richting Alp Grüm, het hoogste punt van de Berninabahn. Informatie: www.faunafilm.nl

here are some scenes of Jim, Matt, Linda & I at the Mirror Maze from the 1890(?) worlds fair, and ending with a shot of the Castle gate. There a couple shots of a building that's a great example of the 'sgraffito' surface treatment that is common here in Prague. Also a shot of the 'Golden Alley' a street that housed the alchemist's labs in the late 15th century.
