The Forces of the Russian Federation (UTC) (Russian: Вооружённые Си́лы Росси́йской Федера́ции Transliteration: Vooruzhyónniye síly Rossíyskoy Federátsii) is the military of Russia, established after the break-up of the Soviet Union. On 7 May 1992 Boris Yeltsin signed a decree establishing the Russian Ministry of Defence and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the RSFSR under Russian Federation control.[1] The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces is the President of the Russian Federation (currently Vladimir Putin). The Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation serves as the administrative body of the military. Since Soviet times, the General Staff has acted as the main commanding and supervising body of the Russian Military Forces. However, currently the General Staff's role is being reduced to that of the Ministry's department of strategic planning, the Minister himself, currently Anatoliy Serdyukov may now be gaining further executive authority over the troops. Other departments include the personnel directorate as well as the Rear Services of the Armed Forces of Russia, railroad troops and construction troops. The Chief of the General Staff is currently General of the Army Yuri Baluyevsky. Baltic Fleet (HQ at Baltiysk in the enclave of Kaliningrad Oblast). Pacific Fleet (HQ at Vladivostok). Russia Should Back Off - U.S.

A Russian navy squadron set off for Venezuela on Monday Sept. 22nd, a move to intensify contacts with Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American nations amid increasingly strained relations with Washington after last month's war between Russia and Georgia. The Russians said the nuclear-powered Peter the Great cruiser accompanied by three other ships sailed from the Northern Fleet's base of Severomorsk on Monday to conduct joint maneuvers with the Venezuelan navy. The deployment follows a weeklong visit to Venezuela by a pair of Russian strategic bombers and comes as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez -- an unbridled critic of U.S. foreign policy who has close ties with Moscow -- plans to visit Moscow this week. It will be Chavez's second trip to Russia in about two months. The intensifying contacts with Venezuela appear to be a response to the U.S. dispatch of warships to deliver aid to Georgia, which angered the Kremlin. "It's a show of the Kremlin irritation about the U.S. deployment to Georgia. It's a signal to the United States: You have broken into our zone of influence, and we will show you that we can enter yours," said independent military analyst. Russia has signed weapons contracts worth more than $4 billion with Venezuela to supply fighter jets, helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles. Chavez's government is in talks to buy Russian submarines, air defense systems and armored vehicles and more Sukhoi fighter jets. The Russian warned the United States that it should not view Latin America as its own backyard. * * * * * North Korea threatened South Korea with destruction Sunday after Seoul's top military officer said his country would consider attacking the communist nation if it tried to carry out a nuclear attack. North Korea test-fired a battery of short-range missiles on Friday in what analysts said was a show of the reclusive state's anger at Washington and the new conservative government in Seoul. Two U.S. Air Force F-15s from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska escorted two Russian Bear long-range bombers out of an air exclusion zone off the coast of Alaska, U.S. military officials told CNN Wednesday. U.S. radar picked up the Russian turbo-prop Tupolev-95 planes about 500 miles off the Alaska coast. The U.S. fighters were dispatched to meet the bombers and escorted them out of the area without incident, the officials said. The United States maintains the air exclusion zone off the coast of Alaska, barring unidentified aircraft or aircraft that don't file flight plans inside that area. Russia and the United States failed to find common ground over U.S. plans to deploy parts of a missile defence shield in eastern Europe. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he had agreed with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice after six hours of talks in Moscow to study further U.S. proposals aimed at allaying Russian concerns about the shield. Early March, a Russian bomber aircraft approached a U.S. aircraft carrier off the Korean coast on and was intercepted by American fighter jets -- the second such incident in less than a month, U.S. defense officials said. A Russian bomber came within three to five nautical miles and flew 2,000 feet (610 meters) above the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and its accompanying ships. Two U.S. F/A-18 fighters were launched to intercept the Russian aircraft and escort it out of the area, according to one defense official.Russian bombers over the past year have increased their flights near U.S. territory and U.S. naval assets, demonstrating their long-range strike capability. In February, two Russian bombers approached the Nimitz near Japan and one flew over the carrier, escorted by a U.S. fighter jet. That was the first Russian overflight of a U.S. carrier since 2004. Those operations come as Russian officials say they will revive some of the military power and reach allowed to collapse with the Soviet Union. U.S. defense officials on Wednesday said they did not consider the Russian bomber flight a threat or concern. USS Nimitz (CVN-68) a supercarrier in the United States Navy with 7000 men on board, is the lead ship of its class that operates in the western Pacific. She is one of the largest warships in the world. She was laid down, launched and commissioned as CVAN-68, but was redesignated CVN-68 (nuclear-powered multimission aircraft carrier) on 30 June 1975 as part of the fleet realignment of that year. The USS Nimitz is part of Carrier Strike Group 11 (CSG-11) with Carrier Air Wing 11 embarked, with Nimitz as the flagship of the battle group and the home of the commander of Destroyer Squadron 23. A frota de navios, que é liderada pelo navio nuclear "Pedro, o Grande" partiu da base de Severomorsk, no Ártico. As manobras conjuntas começarão em novembro.
