India's first War of Independence (part 2) - "The Beginning"
1857 "India's first War of Independence (part 2)- The Beginning " , is produced by Parag Shah of global Mavericks, presenting scenes from the Aamir Khan movie " The Rising -- Ballard of Mangal Pandey". The main overview of this Global Mavericks presentation is to present the legend of Mangal Pandey and the famous Sepoy Rebellian. Overview: The British East India established roots as a trading post in Surat Gujarat in the mid 1700's. By 1857 it had expanded to most of India, controlling large strategic areas. Indian Sepoys "Soldiers" were used by the British Administrative authorities to supplement the British Army in control of Indian territories and British Imperial rule in Asia. In 1857 the British Authorities issued ammunition for their new Enfield rifles. The cartridges were greased with pig and cow remains; A violation of Muslim and Hindu traditions. The British Manipulated the Sepoys in withholding this critical information without the consideration of community sensitivities. This manipulation along width a wide variety of administrative / military abuse including racial, and harsh taxation system, upon the Indian community, provoked the suppressed population into a full fledged revolt with Mangal Pandey and the Sepoys from various British units leading the rebellion. Scots, and Irish including the commander of Mangal Pandey's unit, Captian Willian Gorden joined the Indian Sepoy movement in the rebellion in fighting the British. The Sepoy rebellion was eventually crushed with cruelty. The rebellion is viewed as India's 1st war of Independence and motivated the eventual freedom of India less than a century thereafter. The Sepoy Rebellian united people of Indian origin from vast demographical backgrounds. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Buddists united as a common people from a shared common land. Fighting as brothers, united against Imperialism and racism. Also the Scottish and Irish sympathized the Indian Rebels causing some to join them. The British strategically found the unity of Indians a threat to their control and implemented the "Divide and Rule" theory to keep control of India thereafter by creating secretarian conflicts. Mangal Pandey - Animation
Clip from the DVD -Bhagat Singh and Mangal Pandey- Animated Stories Buy DVD: http://www.superaudio.in/bhagatsinghandmangalpandeydvd-p-3794.html MANGAL PANDEY: Mangal Pandey, an ordinary sepoy in the employment of the British became a great hero when he rebelled against their tyranny. The First War of Independence (1857-1858) was the first widespread uprising against the rule of the British. There were many who fought in that struggle which was belittled by the British as the sepoy mutiny. But the seeds of the revolt were cast by Mangal Pandey, a quiet soldier who fought with courage and determination against British atrocities. Mangal Pandey was a solider in the 34th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry of the English East India Company. Pandey was born in the village of Nagwa in district Ballia (Uttar Pradesh). He jointed the English East India Company's forces in 1849 at the age of 22. Pandey was part of the regiment and fought its officers to protect his dignity and self-respect. At a time when the British seemed invincible, Mangal Pandey courage made him fight them. The result was a mutiny against the British army, which spread to many parts of India. This animated story brings to life the bravery and daring of the great Indian soldier who sacrificed his life for the motherland. |

Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh
Ziaur Rahman, (January 19, 1936 -- May 30, 1981) was the President of Bangladesh and the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Popularly called Zia, he is also sometimes referred to as a Shaheed (Martyr). His widow Begum Khaleda Zia has served as Prime Minister of Bangladesh three times. An officer in the Pakistan Army, Zia's unit captured the Kalurghat radio station at the onset of the Bangladesh Liberation War and declared the independence of Bangladesh on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Recognised as a war hero, he was honoured with the Bir Uttom in 1972. A high-ranking accomplished officer in the Bangladesh Army, Zia was appointed chief of army staff following the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975. Although briefly overthrown in a counter-coup, Zia returned to power through what is called sepoy mutiny organised by Colonel Abu Taher.[1] Declaring himself president in 1977, Zia won a referendum held in 1978. Founding the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Zia won widespread popular support for stabilising the nation and leading it in a new direction. A right-wing politician, Zia established free-market economic policies in a 19-point programme of industrialisation and development. He adopted policies bringing the government increasingly under Islam, which he included in the national constitution. Zia controversially pardoned the assassins of Sheikh Mujib by signing the Indemnity Act and rehabilitated individuals who had supported the Pakistan Army. A popular yet controversial leader, Zia was assassinated in 1981 in an abortive military coup. |
