Our day out visiting the geek capital of Akihabara, full of electronic goodies and manga comic stores. Then on to Asakusa to visit the market, the Senso Ji temple and catch the boat to Obdaiba Island to visit the Science museum. Then a monorail journey back to our hotel to watch the sun set over Tokya. A great day!

My friend Qiang Xie forced me to celebrate a day off school by waking up at 8am to go to Asakusa with him. Granted, it was worth it, but here is all of the crappy footage I took. It's only views from around Sensoji as I needed my hands free to pray, eat, and read my Bad Fortune then tie it to a tree whilst I was in the temple proper. Episode 4 : Nous sommes toujours le 7 août 2008, et je suis arrivé à Asakusa, avec pour objectif la visite du Sensô-ji, également appelé Asakusa Kannon-Dô : un temple dédié à la déesse bouddhique de la Compassion, Kannon. Même si le temple a été détruit pendant la guerre et reconstruit en 1950, il n'en est pas moins très imposant. Même s'il est encore tôt et que la plupart des boutiques de Nakamise-Dôri, la rue piétonne menant au Sensô-ji, sont encore fermées, l'affluence est très importante : en effet le temple est supposé renfermer une statue de Kannon entièrement en or, trouvée par des pêcheurs dans la rivière Sumida en l'an 628 ! Est-elle encore là, derrière ces murs, comme on tente de nous le faire croire ? Comme d'habitude en religion, il semblerait que tout ne soit que question de foi... Quoiqu'il en soit, les alentours du Sensô-ji, faits de petits parcs et jardins zen parsemés de statuettes, respirent une telle tranquillité qu'ils apaiseraient le plus agité des esprits. Halte inattendue au beau milieu de Tôkyô ! J'en profite pour me rendre au petit sanctuaire des tanuki, ces créatures légendaires de l'imaginaire japonais, ratons-laveurs doués du pouvoir de prendre la forme qu'ils désirent et auxquels le réalisateur de génie Isao Takahata a rendu un hommage inégalable dans son film Pompoko. Comment peut-on sérieusement voir un Disney après avoir vu Pompoko ? Tout le quartier d'Asakusa semble conforme à l'image des alentours du Sensô-ji : tranquillité, rues piétonnes où il fait bon se perdre, immeubles à taille humaine... Autre aspect d'Asakusa qui m'a semblé remarquable à titre personnel : c'est là que sont apparus les premiers cinémas du Japon. Les temps ont changé, mais de cette époque ont subsisté quelques "cinémas de quartier", et sur leurs façades subsistent encore les affiches de quelques vieux classiques, comme des fragments de mémoire de cinéphiles... A day in Asakusa.

8 mins long, a temple which contains all the classic features of most temples around Japan, and yet is located in Tokyo, easy to visit and see

This is an annual festival with a dragon dance know as Kinryu-no-mai. The festival celebrates the discovery of the Buddha statue enshrined in the temple and the subsequent founding of Senso-ji. With such a long history it is no surprise that Senso-ji is considered Tokyo's oldest temple. The story goes that two fishermen brothers found a statue of Shokanzeon Bosatsu or Buddha of Mercy while out fishing one day in the lower Sumida River in Tokyo. They try to return it to the river but it kept returning to them so they founded the temple. On the 18th of March geisha preform music in a cart following the dragon as as it winds its way through the busy lane of souvenir shops and people. The dragon approaches the main shrine, I suppose to pay its respects to the Buddha within before heading off to have a lively game of find the golden ball (aka the dance). The dragon itself is 5 meters tall and weighs 80 kilograms. I hope you enjoy this video and if you have the chance visit Sensoji on March 18th for an exciting time in Tokyo.
