Photoshop CS4 New Features: Content Aware Scaling (lynda.com)
http://www.lynda.com/cs4u/index.asp?cid=cs408_youtube Deke McClelland shows you how to convert a horizontal or landscape oriented image and convert it to a vertical image using Content Aware Scaling in Photoshop CS4. Content aware scaling allows you scale the low detail or background information inside of an image while keeping foreground objects intact. Deke also shows how to troubleshoot potential problems with Content Aware Scaling, using the Protect Skin Tone option to preserve detail around flesh tones and masks to isolate scaling to certain areas of the image. |

Seattle Conference on Scalability: Scaling Google Maps from the big screen do...
Google Tech Talks June 14, 2008 ABSTRACT Jerry will talk about scaling Google Maps from the desktop down to mobile phones where usage is growing rapidly and will someday surpass desktop usage. He will discuss the approaches used in adapt- ing the application to work in a low bandwidth, high latency environment with a wide variety of net- works and devices. Mobile data rates currently range from 100 Kbps to 2 Mbps but more significantly, HTTP network request latency is measured in seconds. Mobile phone screens are very small compared to laptops, so we can't just shrink down the view. User input is often limited to 12-key keypads plus two soft keys, sometimes augmented with an alpha keyboard and/or a touch screen. The key adaptation was reimplementing the AJAX web site as a client-server application, ported to several mobile platforms. We redesigned the user interface for the narrow UI bottleneck and added cel- lular-based location detection so people don't have to type an address just to get the map open to the right page. An application-specific network protocol and tile cache help with the high latency network by multiplexing requests together into fewer round trips. A special "mobile" tile set helps with latency and bandwidth by downloading smaller map tiles while offering more frequent road labels to suit tiny screens. Compression techniques such as a compact-header JPEG format for satellite images also help. The server is stateless so scaling up capacity is mostly handled by adding more servers. People are unaccustomed to downloading applications to their phones, and the phones have download limits, so it's important to keep the download package small. We also get the application preinstalled on some phones. Speaker: Jerry Morrison Jerry Morrison is a tech lead on Google Maps for mobile. He programs the server and clients in collaboration with teams in London, New York, Seattle, Tokyo, Beijing, and Cupertino. Jerry's career interest is bringing new forms of media to many people. |

Scaling Information Access to Serve Billions of the World's Poorest People
Google Tech Talks June, 3 2008 ABSTRACT Have you heard that Google wants to wire up the entire African continent? Or that broadband will be ubiqitous throughout developing countries in ten years? Or that poor kids with connected laptops will teach each other? Or that the latest fiber optics cable being installed will lower Internet costs overnight? Just like many other realms of human activity, access to information and communication is dramatically different between privileged people and the world's poor. Six out of seven people worldwide have no access to the Internet. It is important to have a realistic understanding of the manifold hurdles and constraints that face those who want to serve the bulk of humanity that is currently beyond the "World Wide" Web. The WiderNet Project, a non-profit service program in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Iowa, mixes practical research with capacity building activities to identify best practices in deploying ICT in developing countries. Over 4,000 people have been through their practical, hands-on training programs in sub-Saharan Africa. Their volunteers have provided over 1,200 refurbished computers and $1.5 million in hardware and software donations to partners across the continent. And they have developed an off-line digital library that contains over 1,200 Web sites and CD-ROMs (over ten millions documents) for those with little or no Internet connectivity. Cliff Missen, the project director, will present information on the scale of the challenges and the three challenges of scaling technology to serve millions of people: computer face time, information access, and human capacity. Speaker: Cliff Missen Cliff has over 20 years professional experience in computers, networking, multimedia design, and applications development. At The WiderNet Project, he combines this with his long-term interest in international development. His first visit to Africa was with a medical team in 1982, and he continues to teach and promote appropriate water well drilling technology through the U.S. non--profit organization Wellspring Africa. |

How Evolution REALLY Works, Part II
Natural Selection prevents deleterious mutations from spreading throughout a population while fostering the spread of beneficial mutations. One can get populations to do many things with this simulator. Just remember, if your parameters are not realistic, your solution will not represent reality. To download the Population Simulator go to: http://www.mediafire.com/?z2p2ydew1id To download this video go to: http://www.mediafire.com/?zqmzezllkyv If you wish to translate this video you can download the PowerPoint file from: http://www.mediafire.com/?yexml12mkgi Predator evolution is simulated by scaling the populations mean survival probability back to the attrition rate. Example. If the Attrition rate is 0.9 and every member of the population has a number of beneficial mutations then the mean probability of death may be 0.8. If the predators were allowed to evolve (as they would in nature) that would scale the mean death probability back to 0.9. This is known as the Red Queen Hypothesis. The organisms have to keep evolving just to stand still. Without predator evolution enough beneficial mutations can pile up to lower the death probability to 0 (or nearly so). This would stop selection as every member would live to mate. Error: I stated that without selection, evolution stops. This is not entirely true. Genetic drift operates in the absence of selection. It is one mechanism by which neutral mutations can become fixed in a populations. Think about it. |

This House Is A Circus- Arctic Monkeys @ Glastonbury 2007
The Arctic Monkeys performing This House Is A Circus from their sophomore album Favorite Worst Nightmare live at Glastonbury on the 22nd of June 2007 Lyrics This house is a circus, berserk as fuck We tend to see that as a perk though. Look What it's done to your friends their memories are pretend And the last thing that they want is for the feeling to end This house is a circus, berserk as fuck We tend to see that as a perk though. Look What it's done to your friends their memories are pretend And the last thing that they want is for the feeling to end There's a room full of trouble and there's lovers to be had Those ones who make sinners out of such lovely lads Scaling the corridors for maidens in the maze And the anomaly is slipping into familiar ways And we're forever unfulfilled Can't think why Like a search for murder clues In dead man's eyes Forever unfulfilled And can't think why Like a search for murder clues In dead man's eyes The more you open your mouth The more you're forcing performance And all the attention is leading me to feel important (obnoxious, completely obnoxious) Now that we're here, we may as well go too far Wriggling around in incidents you won't forget There's certainly some venom in the looks that you collect Aimlessly gazing at the faces in the queue And we're struggling with the notion that it's life not film This house is a circus, berserk as fuck(We're forever unfulfilled) We tend to see that as a perk though.(We can't think why) Look what it's done to your friends their memories are pretend(Like a search for murder clues) And the last thing that they want is for the feeling to end |

French daredevil scales New York Times building
A French skyscraper climber has been taken into custody after scaling the New York Times building in midtown Manhattan to draw attention to global warming. During his ascent, Alain Robert unfurled a banner about global warming. Construction workers cheered. Police took him into custody at the top of the new 52-story tower, designed by Renzo Piano. In February, the daredevil, who's nicknamed "Spiderman," scaled a 42-floor building in Brazil. Robert's Web site says he has climbed more than 70 skyscrapers around the world. |

The Dollar's collapse & the Bailout by Peter Schiff & Ron Paul
http://www.mysilvercoins.com/american-eagle-silver-coins.html http://nl.youtube.com/user/mysilvercoins PROTECT YOUR FAMILY STANDARD OF LIFE RON PAUL Originally from the Green Tree suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Gettysburg College in 1957, then studied at Duke University School of Medicine; after his 1961 graduation and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, he became a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, serving outside the Vietnam War zone. He later represented Texas districts in the U.S. House of Representatives (19761977, 19791985, and 1997present). He entered the 1988 presidential election, running as the Libertarian nominee while remaining a registered Republican, and placed a distant third. Paul has been described as conservative, Constitutionalist, and libertarian.[2] He advocates a foreign policy of nonintervention, having voted against actions such as the Iraq War Resolution, but in favor of force against terrorists in Afghanistan. He favors withdrawal from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the United Nations, citing the dangers of foreign entanglements to national sovereignty. Having pledged never to raise taxes, he has long advocated ending the federal income tax, scaling back government spending, abolishing most federal agencies, and removing military bases and troops from foreign soil; he favors hard money and opposes the Federal Reserve. He also opposes the Patriot Act, the federal War on Drugs, No Child Left Behind, and gun regulation. Paul is strongly pro-life, and has introduced bills to negate Roe v. Wade, but affirms states' rights to allow, regulate or ban abortion, rather than federal jurisdiction.[3] While Paul was a leading 2008 presidential candidate in some Republican straw polls, he saw substantially less support in landline opinion polls and in the actual primaries. Strong internet grassroots support was indicated by the popularity of his name in search queries and the number of his campaign's YouTube subscriptions. His book, The Revolution: A Manifesto, became a bestseller immediately upon release and went on to be #1 on the New York Times nonfiction best sellers list.[9] --------------------------------------- Ron Paul 2008 Campaign On January 25, 2008, Peter Schiff was appointed as an economic adviser in Ron Paul's presidential campaign. Schiff made the following statement concerning Paul's economic revitalization plan: We need a plan that stimulates savings and production not more of the reckless borrowing and consumption that got us into this mess in the first place. Ron Pauls plan is the only one that amounts to a step in the right direction. If you want meaningful change - for the better that is - Ron Paul is the only candidate capable of delivering it. The others merely promise to continue the failed policies that are at the root of our current economic problems. RonPaul2008.com Press release ---------------------------------------- PETER SCHIFF Peter Schiff is the president of Euro Pacific Capital Inc., a brokerage firm based in Darien, Connecticut. Peter adheres to the principles of the Austrian School of Economics and the Ludwig von Mises Institute [5]. Schiff frequently appears as a guest on CNBC, Fox News, and Bloomberg Television and is often quoted in major financial publications about his views on gold and silver. Schiff points to the low savings rates of the United States as its worst malady, citing the transformation from being the world's largest creditor nation in the '70s to the largest debtor nation at the turn of 2000. His extremely bearish views on the US Dollar, the United States stock market, bond market, and the United States economy have earned him the nickname "Dr. Doom."[6] He is currently an economic adviser for the Ron Paul presidential campaign.[1] Schiff writes a weekly commentary about current economic conditions. His father is tax protester Irwin Schiff. Schiff wrote a book called "Crash Proof" - 2007 (ISBN 978-0-470-04360-8) and also hosts a live internet radio show called "Wall Street Unspun."
