Cobra Lily traps Sawfly

My young Cobra Lily greets the spring sun by trapping a visiting Sawfly that has come to avail of the nectar bait.

Cobra Lily gets another Sawfly

Good hunting today as two Sawflies were captured by the Cobra Lily. Take a close look at the small "windows" in the trap that allow light in to confuse the fly.

gross sawfly larvaes eating the shrub in front off my house this is gross but cool ps i said they were canker worms cause thats wat i thought they were but they are not. they turn into wasps to

Sawfly tries to escape Cobra Lily in vain.

A sawfly can be seen entering the "Lobster Pot" style trap of a Cobra Lily only to wander endlessly trying to find a way past the windows into the light.

Sawfly Larva フトオビコンボウハバチの幼虫

Sawfly larva feeding on the foliage of Weigela hortensis(?). When disturbed, it curled up in defense. Unsure about the ID but one possible candidate was Zaraea triangularis (family Cimbicidae). Mid-July 2008 in Japan. ハバチの幼虫がタニウツギの葉を食べていました。フトオビコンボウハバチでしょうか(自信なし)。身の危険を感じると丸まって防御姿勢になります。

INSECT & SPIDER HIGHLIGHTS

Photos I took during 2007 of insects and arachnids found mainly in West Devon & East Cornwall during the summer of 2007. Nothing particularly rare but a record of what was around (at least that didn't fly off before I could take a picture !). And some music. Please help me with unidentified species or correct me if I've got any wrong ! They are: Cardinal beetle (pyrochroa serraticornis - the one with a red head); Oil Beetle (meloe proscarabeus); Unknown beetle - please help!; Silver Washed Fritillary (unconfirmed)?; Unidentified butterfly paying visit to hand; Speckled wood butterfly; Large skipper; marbled white; peacock; red admiral; unidentified - fritillary ?; unidentified moth or buttlerfly - not sure please help!; burnett moth; speckled yellow moth with damage to wing?; silver ground carpet moth; broad bodied cahser (female) Libellula depressa ?; broad bodied cahser (male); common darter; golden ringed dragonfly; unidentified damselfly; common blue damselfly (male); buff tailed bumble bee?; unidentified water nymph - some kind of water beetle maybe?; caddisfly larvae - not sure what type...; adult caddisflies mating (not sure what type); unidentified cricket - very small with attractive coffee coloured back; dark bush cricket (I'm guessing here); grasshopper - stumped again !; cranefly / daddylonglegs; ENORMOUS hoverfly - though perfectly harmless I understand - volucella zonaria; unknown hoverfly; unidentified fly; unidentified hoverfly; sawfly larvae ?; unidentified sawfly; harvestman; garden orb spider; green orb spider; unidentified spider; bristletail

Primitive Cobra Leaf Trap

A sawfly visits one of the primitive leaves and makes its way into the trap. Although the leaf is not the typical Cobra Lily design, these are still very efficient traps suited for smaller springtails and mites.

Nepenthes ephippiata Gets Lots of Visitors

Sure-footed ants manage to clamber about the dry trap efficiently while a sawfly bites the biscuit!

Sawflies Mating While Eating ハバチの交尾と捕食

A pair of sawflies (suborder Symphyta) mating on the leaf of Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica). One (female?) was devouring a snack of tiny prey (wasp?) during copulation. The body was infested with several tiny red mites (family Erythraeoidea). Mid-June 2008 in Japan.

Cobra Lily Swallows Beetle

Watch a beetle get trapped and swallowed by a Cobra Lily. The light travels through the plant showing a silhouette of the prey.

SAWFLIES saw flies

I think these are sawflies... wasp relatives, spotted here in abundance in an overgrown lane West Devon. They seemed very busy doing something, and the little white tips on their antennae make them look pretty cool. A bit like Melle Mel in The Message.

A Black Wasp

With its skinnier abdomen, I changed the ID to a Black Wasp not a Sawfly.

Pileated Woodpecker

I am a little leery in saying this is the pileated as it is an "uncommon yet widespread resident of BC" So, lets go with the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, as its range tends to be the Northern half of BC and into the Yukon, and it overwinters in Southern US. It forages on insects (eg. spruce bugworm, tent caterpillar, sawfly, scale insect), tree sap, cambium and berries and other fruit. Nests located in hardwoods :aspen, balsam poplar adjacent to a rich source of H2O. Live trees with heart rot preferred, the mating pair excavated a hole and tends to reuse it year after year. 2-12M off ground. The only reason I Balk at saying it is the Yellow Bellied is because I think this bird in the video is bloody huge! I have had it fly right in front of me on a couple occasions and its the biggest woodpecker I have EVER seen! But looking at the range, the Pileated should be in southern BC by now, along the coast and the Yellow Bellied are still finding their way down to the US. But you never know, these birds don't fly by a flight manual.

Cobra Lily Watering Demonstration

Keeping the "soil" damp is an understatement...
