Scenes from kiln building class at Pottery Northwest (http://www.potterynorthwest.org/ -- so we have a dilemma on burner port placement. We are off by about 1/2 inch. But how about using a rowlock course instead? Then 2 bricks standing on their sides will give us 5 inches vs. one brick lying flat giving us 4.5 inches. Bingo, no? Unfortunately it didn't quite work out. A rowlock course gives us a course height of 4.5 inches, a number not easy to incorporate into a wall built with the 2.5-inch height of stretcher and header courses. In other words, we solved the burner port problem only to find ourselves with a more serious leveling problem from this point on. Now, if we had been using 9"x4.5"x3" bricks instead of these 9"x4.5"x2.5" bricks then it might be a different story...
