For an upcoming documentary by Benedikt Bjarnason, RhNav - Rhizome Navigation was used to create animated visualizations of large genealogy data sets. The graph layout was done using an adapted force-directed algorithm and features more than 3300 persons. What set's it apart from similar visualizations is the capability to show far more complex relationships by breaking up the classic tree structure and following a more rhizome-like approach - and of course the sheer amount of relationships shown.

This abstraction from reality represents an incomplete one. Reason pretends to represent a true abstraction from reality. It's a way of arranging matter, only based upon recognition. Representative thinking is based upon existing matter. It fails in the creation of concepts because new matter is neglected. Creation has to evolve from necessity. It's always on the crossing border of existing and non-existing matter. Creation will be based upon imagination. Rhizome - multiple entries of equal importance. It's not equal to profession or learning. Rhizome - enables one to connect the obvious with the non-obvious. One will avoid obviousness.

Using the transcripts of Bill Gates' keynote from CES 2007 and Steve Jobs' keynote at Macworld 2007 (via Todd Bishop's Microsoft Blog) I created this relational tagcloud using Rhizome Navigation. This tagcloud joins the words from both keynotes and reveals which words both texts have in common and which not. You can see that mostly non-technical, emotional terms dominate the center (which both texts share). It's up to you to guess which colors represent the speakers.
