Placing an added emphasis on corporate social responsibility and ensuring it is at the core of a business' strategy can yield financial benefits, according to a study from IBM. The survey, "Attaining Sustainable Growth Through Corporate Social Responsibility," indicates many companies now view CSR as a growth opportunity and not just a regulatory compliance. Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed say they are using CSR activities to help generate revenue. In addition, many companies also view these types of initiatives as a way to gain a competitive advantage and access new business opportunities. Increased awareness by consumers on issues from climate change to product safety is, in part, driving corporate concern for these issues, according to the survey. In turn, the increased visibility of corporate behavior is influencing consumers' decisions on what to buy and who to buy from, who to work for, who to partner with and where to invest. The survey is based on responses from top executives at more than 250 companies worldwide.

Rebels in the remote Afar region on the Ethiopian-Eritrean border have claimed responsibility for the kidnappings of five Europeans released last week in an interview on Eritrean state media (March 19 2007). Armed men claiming to be from the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF) made the claim in a broadcast on Eritrean television late on Sunday, including the first pictures of the release of the European hostages. "The main reason we took the hostages is because the TPLF (Ethiopia) claims that ARDUF has been wiped out, and we needed to expose the regime's false propaganda and declare our existence," an unnamed ARDUF spokesperson said in Afar language. "ARDUF is still fighting and will go on fighting." The 20-minute interview included the first footage of the five European hostages being released last Tuesday in Eritrea. It showed the three men and two women shaking hands with and waving to a group of around a dozen armed men in desert military fatigues before being led away by Afar elders. The five were then shown boarding an Eritrean military helicopter, holding small rucksacks. The report made no mention of eight Ethiopian hostages captured in the northeast Ethiopian desert with the British embassy-linked group on March 1 and still missing. Eritrea has already said that the group was kidnapped by separatist rebel group ARDUF, which opposes the division of the Afar people among Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti. Eritrea has strongly rejected Ethiopian accusations that it masterminded the kidnapping. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a bitter territorial war between 1998 and 2000 and are still deeply at odds over their border. A new variant of Indian Mujahideen (IM) has reportedly claimed responsibility for Assam serial blasts in an SMS purportedly sent by the outfit to a local TV channel. The outfit calls itself Islamic Security Force-Indian Mujahideen (ISF-IM). The authenticity of the SMS has not yet been checked.

On my way back home I stopped in a convenient store to get a diet Pepsi and asked a customer if they knew anything about the trial and the customer told me they had just seen the defendants and told me the direction they where heading and gave me description of their vehicles. I headed in the direction I was told and came upon the defendants at a small motel near Brandenburg, Kentucky. I approached them and asked if I could get a video statement they told me they had to go do a ABC interview, but they would be back in 2 hours. When they returned I shot video of two of the defendants "Imperial Wizard" Ron Edwards, and Jarred Hensley Vice President of Supreme White Alliance. I also shot video of Steve Edwards President of Supreme White Alliance, the son of "Imperial Wizard" Ron Edwards. I've put up this video, not because I believe in what these men had to say nor to promote their beliefs, but rather to let these men speak for themselves and let you make up your own mind.
