Representation & the Media: Featuring Stuart Hall
http://www.mediaed.org In this accessible introductory lecture, Hall focuses on the concept of "representation"-- one of the key ideas of cultural studies-- and shows how reality is never experienced directly, but always through the symbolic categories made available by society. |

Knowledge Representation and the Semantic Web
Google TechTalks January 25, 2006 Peter Patel-Schneider http://www-db.research.bell-labs.com/user/pfps/ ABSTRACT The Semantic Web has been attracting considerable attention the last few years. From the point of view of Knowledge Representation, the Semantic Web affords opportunities for both research and application. However, several aspects of the Semantic Web, as it has been envisioned, cause problems from the Knowledge Representation viewpoint. Overcoming some of these problems has resulted in a more formal basis for the Semantic Web and an increase in expressive power in Semantic Web languages. Other of these problems still remain and need a new vision of the Semantic Web from a... |

Microsoft Unwrap Mosaics: A new representation
We introduce a new representation for video which facilitates a number of common editing tasks. The representation has some of the power of a full reconstruction of 3D surface models from video, but is designed to be easy to recover from a priori unseen and uncalibrated footage. By modelling the image-formation process as a 2D-to-2D transformation from an object's texture map to the image, modulated by an object-space occlusion mask, we can recover a representation which we term the "unwrap mosaic". Many editing operations can be performed on the unwrap mosaic, and then re-composited into the original sequence, for example resizing objects, repainting textures, copying/cutting/pasting objects, and attaching effects layers to deforming objects. |

Fictitious Representation of INTP personality type
This is an attempt to illustrate the INTP Personality type based on the Myers-Briggs scale. I used "The Architect" scenes from the movie "Matrix Reloaded" because I believe him to be an INTP. You may need to pause the "text" scenes to be able to read them. Because of Youtube time constraints, I had to shorten the text durations. Please keep in mind that he is a fictional character and does not "totally" fit the INTP profile. Well, mostly he does. And yes, I am an INTP. Just thought I would clarify that. ;) Update 08-08-08, I've been getting a lot of comments from people trying to inform me that I have misspelled words in the vid. I KNOW THIS! It was already addressed in earlier comments. In light of this, I have had a few people tell me because of my spelling errors I make a poor INTP. Let's clarify something. Just because someone is INTP it does not guarantee perfect spelling. I speak English, Spanish, Japanese and basic Chinese but I am a lousy speller. Get over it people. I have. Also, I get a lot of you saying that the character is INTJ. That may be true. This character is not real, anything is possible. Another aspect is that this is a matured INTP male and may come off far more confident and scolding than a young INTP would. This video was just for fun you guys. Relax. :) |

Robert Fisk on false representation of Hezbollah
Robert Fisk decries U.S. media's failure to report the truth about Hezbollah and the conflict in Lebanon. I wrote a related ICH article on the subject during the conflict. "Free in Our Time" http://billnoxid.wordpress.com/2007/04/18/free-in-our-time-august-22-2006/ (Excepts below ) "What is happening in Lebanon will change ( by example ) a variety of things on this planet that people accept as fact. The fundamental reason for this is that when Hassan Nasrallah says he cares about the Lebanese people, he means it. Not that anyone in this country would know that of course, since mainstream media hasn't played more than thirty seconds of any of his statements followed by the "white man's overview", but if you had the opportunity to actually hear him you would surely know differently. This makes him unique as a leader since there are very few leaders ( certainly not ours ) that actually care for the people they are supposed to serve and protect. We should all be very well aware by now that leaders on this planet aren't elected, they are "installed" and are there to support the desires of the Global Corporation at the expense of the individual. One glaring example of this was Hezbollah's immediate response to the cease fire. Engineers and doctors were immediately dispatched, and registry centers were set up all over the south for people in need of aid. The response was so swift that European aid agencies that went in after the cease fire couldn't find people that had not already been visited by Hezbollah. The aid workers reported that "The people were happy to take the extra supplies but said Hezbollah had already taken care of all of their needs". Two days after registering, people were called back in and given $12,000 U.S. Dollars each ( the equivalent of two and a half times the average annual salary ), no questions asked. All of this occurred within three days of the end of the bombings. Nasrallah has additionally pledged to not only rebuild their houses, but to build them better ones. Contrast this with the U.S. response to Katrina. Weeks after the event the most the U.S. was willing to offer these people was a $1,200 impossible to get debit card ( which isn't equivalent to anything ) for which they have now spent untold millions in tracking down supposed "fraudulent" use of those funds. A year after the event these people are still homeless, the city is still in rubble, and the only thing our government did for them was to stigmatize them for not being wealthy enough to get out of the way on their own. Which of these responses seems like the act of a terrorist government to you? Unless you're a fool, you would have to choose the latter. Is that the kind of environment you expect the peoples of the world to warmly embrace? If they wholly reject it, does that mean they hate your "freedom"? If they say "No, you can't have our land, you can't have our resources, and you can't have the servitude of our people", will you call that terrorism?" This article is also posted at ICH. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article14649.htm |

Historical Representation of an INTJ - Nikola Tesla 1
This is part one of my interpretation of the characters in the movie The Secret of Nikola Tesla. These descriptions are based on the Myer Briggs personality profiles. I won't go into what those are since it's long. If you've never heard of this there are pleanty of websites where you can look it up. Tesla was the ultimate INTJ. I started this with the main focus on him. But I loved the interaction between all four characters so I decided to do a little on each one. J.P. Morgan played by Orson Welles is ESTJ. Adams seems to be ISTJ Edison is listed in many areas as ENTP, but in this movie he comes off more as a ENFP. Edison isn't the hero that he's made out to be. He stole many ideas and Tesla is the one responsible for basically everything electronic we have today. I loved what a jerk Edison was in this and how angry he was. Everyone pretty much slapped him around verbally in this film. The second part can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87BaoGGrZ_0 |
