Thousands of Hmong face forced repatriation - 01 Mar 08
The United Nations' refugee agency is concerned about Thailand's apparent forced repatriation of a group of about a dozen ethnic Hmong back to Laos. Thousands have lived as refugees in Thailand for decades, claiming they would be persecuted if they were forced back across the border. However, under a repatriation pact, the Thai government will send nearly 8,000 Hmong back to Laos. International monitors have been barred from the country but the Laos government says the Hmong will be safe. Hannah Belcher has our exclusive report. |

Forced Repatriation - UK
July 2007 Asylum seekers who have spent years living in the UK now face the prospect of being repatriated to Iraq. One such refugee, Sadullah Kakl, was killed shortly after his return. He's lived in England for over six years. Now, he's being sent back to a war zone. "I begged them not to send me back but they didn't listen", he laments. We catch up with him a few weeks later in Iraq. "My son is very scared. We can hardly sleep at night", confides his mother. Luqman is depressed and too afraid to leave the house. Another man forcibly repatriated from Europe had a mental breakdown and gunned down nine neighbours. "He was driven to it by despair", states his father. "Something just snapped in his brain." Trooper Jack Sadler Repatriation Ceremony
Trooper Jack Sadler, a Territorial Army soldier with the Honourable Artillery Company, died when the vehicle he was traveling in caught in an explosion during a tactical patrol to the north of Sangin, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Jack (21) was originally from Exeter but lived in London where, having completed his extensive basic training and obtained a degree in War Studies at the University of London, he volunteered for mobilisation and deployment to Afghanistan. Although a reservist, he had no difficulty fitting in and soon became an integral member of a highly effective and close knit team. He was a dedicated and professional soldier who had proved himself to be a reliable in demanding tactical patrols and in the face of the enemy. An intelligent man, he had a keen wit and a dry sense of humour which he used to great effect whenever the going became tough. |

Roots Reggae - For The Vinyl Junkie
Roots reggae is a subgenre of reggae that concerns itself with the life of the ghetto sufferer.[1] Lyrical themes include poverty, social issues, resistance to government oppression, repatriation, and Rastafari. The heyday of roots reggae is usually considered the latter half of the 1970s, with singers such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Johnny Clarke, Horace Andy, and Lincoln Thompson teaming up with producers such as Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Bunny Lee, Joseph Hoo Kim and Coxsone Dodd. The experimental pioneering of such producers within often-restricted technological parameters gave birth to dub, and is seen by some music historians as one of the earliest (albeit analogue) contributions to modern dance music production techniques. Roots reggae, having its origins in the Jamaican landscape, also made its way into the United States with the mass migration of Jamaicans to New York. This took place with the reforms made to American immigration laws in the early 1960's. Along with localized traditions and food, reggae music was inevitably brought as well, contributing to the New York City soundscape http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roots_reggae |

Trooper Robert Pearson Repatriation Ceremony
Trooper Robert Pearson -- or "Chesney" to his friends -- came from Grimsby and joined his local regiment, The Queen's Royal Lancers, in early 2007 where he became the driver of a Scimitar Reconnaissance vehicle. The 22-year-old was part of the Armoured Support Company Royal Marines providing security to a resupply convoy in Afghanistan. The convoy was returning to Camp Bastion when the vehicle he was driving hit a suspected mine. Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team, Trooper Pearson was pronounced dead on arrival at the field hospital at Camp Bastion. The commanding officer described the young Trooper as a "popular and well respected individual". He said: "His outgoing and confident manner gave a strong indication to his chain of command that he was a talent to watch. For those that might question whether or not today's soldiers are a match for their forebears he was ample proof that they are every bit as good and more. . . The Lancers have lost a good soldier." |
