4,000 volt power supply (microwave transformers)
This shows how I connected 2 microwave transformers in series for a 4,000 volt power supply I built earlier. I used a light bulb to limit current. When an arc is drawn from a transformer, it shorts out the transformer. This cancels out the inductive reactance on the primary winding because of mutual inductance, and you'll see the light bulb get a lot brighter. When the transformer is unloaded (no arc), the light bulb is actually dimmer than normal because the transformers' primary windings add impedance. But when you draw an arc, it shorts out the transformer and cancels out the inductive reactance on the primary circuit. This means less resistance, so the light bulb gets brighter. You can see why you need something to limit current! When you draw an arc from the transformer, it causes a current surge. |

Inductive ballast
This video shows the inductive ballast I built to current limit high voltage transformers. It uses 4 big chokes connected in series. This limits current to about 8 amps maximum. Some transformers, like microwave oven transformers (MOTs) are not current limited, so you have to use an external resistance to regulate the current and prevent overloads. I've tried different ways to limit current, but inductive reactance seems to be the best way. I don't really like MOTs though. Neon transformers are a lot easier to use for high voltage experiments, and they're already current limited, so you don't have to use a ballast. |

Resonant Rise - a closer look at Tesla Coils
This is a short video I made, discussing my Tesla Coil, and how Tesla Coils work with resonance. Also a little background about Nikola Tesla and his experiments with high voltage and high frequency alternating current. Be sure your sound is turned on. I still don't have that much experience with making videos, and this might not be the best explanation for how Tesla Coils work. But at least it's a start! |

500KV Substation arc.. Nice
This video clip was captured by the maintenance foreman of the 500 kV Eldorado Substation near Boulder City, Nevada. It shows a three-phase motorized air disconnect switcher attempting to open high voltage being supplied to a large three phase shunt line reactor. The line reactor is the huge gray transformer-like object behind the truck at the far right at the end of the clip. Line reactors are large iron core coils (inductors) which are used to counteract the effects of line capacitance on long Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines. Internally, this line reactor has three coils, one for each phase in the three-phase system. Each coil within the reactor can provide 33.3 Million Volt Amperes of compensating inductive reactance (MVAR) at 290 kV between each phase to ground . The power company had previously encountered difficulty interrupting one of the three phases when trying to disconnect the line reactor. The substation maintenance crew set up a special test so that they could videotape the switching event, The system contains a non conductive gas which is vented when the circuits are tripped. one leg of the circuit was not working correctly and therefore not quenching the spark with the SF6 (ozone depleting) gas. 4kv power supply with inductive ballast
This is another video of my 4,000 volt power supply, using two microwave transformers in series. But this time I'm using an inductive ballast I made, instead of a light bulb to limit the current. The arc might not look that big, but this is actually about 4,000 volts at 180 milliamps. It's drawing about 6 amps from the primary side...120 volts at 6amps is 720 VA. So it would be 4,000 volts at 180ma on the secondary side. I could supply more current by bypassing some of the chokes in the ballast. I might do that in another video later. |

Bio Feedback-EPFX
EPFX stands for Electro-Physiological Frequency Xrroid. It is a state of the art evoked potential bio-feedback system for stress reduction, designed by a complementary Health Practitioner, Professor Bill Nelson. The EPFX has been designed using the principles of Quantum Physics, during the treatment, the EPFX measures the body's resonance/reactance pattern and determines the stress areas ( that include physical, mental, and emotional ) and then safely balances them. It measures 10,000 components and provides bio-feedback during the test. http://www.quantumbodyenergy.com |

V03 Carrier Effects in RF Semiconductor
In 1971 Dr. Ohsaki joined OKI Research Laboratory and engaged in R&D of very high speed wireless data transmission by 20GHz band amiming 500Mbps per CH, system data rate more than 8Gbps. In his research activity, he found two very important findings of carrier effects in FR semiconductor. The first one is an invention of today's Hetero-Junction to generate high density free electrons at an interface of i-Ge (i-GaAs) and n-GaAs (n-GaP) of compound semiconductor crystals. By this structure, ultra high speed transistors of bipolar and FET are realized. So far wave guides were used in microwave systems with very large physical size and weight. Such microwave systems could be integrated on a tinny semiconducto chip by Hetero-Juction structure. RF Amp, LO, and Mixer were integrated on a GaAs chip of a few square mm. Today his invented structure is so widely used in cellular phone, TV, and satellite communication and many others. The second one is minority carrier effect of PN junction when it is switched from forward to reverse and application to very high spped high power direct phase modulation. The minority carrier works as a variable resistance (not reactance), and hence orthogonal component of modulated microwave is dramatically decreased, and QPSK(Multi-PAM) modulation & de-modulation by low bit error rate is achieved. And PIN junction for more effective application of minority carriers was proposed. A special driving circuit for modulation was developed too. Before his invention, SBD or varactor diode were used, but power handling capability was very small and modulation loss was large, -2 to -3 dB. On the other hand, the loss by his method was less tahn -0.5 dB. Today his invention is still used in satellite communication and rader system. |

Induction motor, single phase, no capacitor to start needed.
PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION This is a 2 pole, single phase, permanent capacitor, induction motor, 2 poles on the main winding 2 poles on the auxiliary, 127V, 3450rpm nominal. In this clip I show that the capacitor gives the initial torque to the motor to start, and in the case of permanent capacitor, to give extra torque while functioning. You can see that one side of the capacitor is conected to the auxiliary winding end and the other to the main winding end; this is obviously to create the phase shift btween the auxiliary and main windings, and get a phase shift of aprox 90 electrical degrees. By closing the circuit at different poles of the capacitor you change the rotating magnetic field direction and therefore the direction of the rotor. The main winding and the auxiliary one are circuits conected in parallel. The common conections on single phase splitted motors is this: The main winding is a RL circuit. The auxiliary winding is a RCL circuit. On the clip, I remove the capacitor making the auxiliary also an RL circuit reducing the phase shift, two things still happen: the auxiliary winding has still strong enough torque to start the motor, and even run it, but, since this motor does not have a centrifugal switch the auxiliary winding maintains the speed low because of the magnetic field proximity (electrical proximity in degrees) to the main one. And since the inductive reactance of the windings is different and fixed, the motor always starts in the same direction. It is not shown here that if I remove the capacitor and leave only one of the two windings I can start the motor by cranking it (I show that on another clip though), and it will turn in any direction at the same speed either using only the main or auxiliary winding but not both (it will have a different speed for each winding). |
