Japanese Zero-fighters of the legendary 204 Sq. take off from the IJN airbase in Rabaul to intercept American fighter-planes and bombers. The film showing the Zero-fighters taking off was taken on the 17th January, 1944. On this day, a total of 79 Japanese planes shot down 12 of the 117 intruders (F6F, F4U, P-38, SBD and TBF) without any loss.

Oct 2007 Robberies, theft, drug abuse and drunkenness from "home brew" would be a challenge to any police force. But even by PNG standards the Rabaul police are ill equipped - no diesel to run their vehicles, no handcuffs and sometimes no stationery on which to write reports. Rabaul's business people have had enough. They've enlisted as volunteer reservists, and taken up arms. Each Friday and Saturday night they don uniforms and collect their weapons for another night patrolling the town. "In the last six months, we've taken out just about all of the top ten criminals in Rabaul," boasts local businessman, Bruce Alexander. "We've either captured them, or they've run away and that's calmed the situation down a lot."

The Japanese Navy is ascendant in its conquests, of which its linchpin is the main base at Rabaul in the New Britain Islands. This Victory at Sea episode refers to the US strategy of surrounding and strangling the Japanese base in the fall of 1943 through set piece invasions of its surrounding islands (Bouganville, Rendova). Praise should be given to the Seabees, which made the airfields operational in a short time, and observation planes and radar, which helped the U.S. Navy stop cold Japanese reinforcements and counterattacks. On Monday 19 September 1994, on the island of New Britain, Tavurvur volcano erupted, billowing millons of tons of ash up into the atmosphere, falling as a grey mist on Rabaul town and surrounding villages. What ensued was practically the total devistation of Rabaul town.

Rabaul was the main Japanese base in the South Pacific in WW2. View of the volcano and Rabaul Harbour from the observatory. The major eruption of the volcano in 1994 destroyed the city (once the 3rd largest in PNG). The part of the city closest to the volcano has never been rebuilt, but was well developed before the volcano and home to the airport. There was a minor eruption the day after we left.
