The RMS Queen Mary & The Yarrow Project: Part 1 of 2

Part 1 - This video presentation gives a short historical look into the sailing career of the great Cunard Line steamship, RMS Queen Mary and her 31 years of service from 1936-1967. When constructed, she was equipped with greatest assembly of propulsion machinery ever to go to sea... but after her retirement and rebirth as a floating hotel, museum and convention center in Long Beach, California, the history and science behind her once-impressive boilers and engines was stripped, scrapped and forgotten. The Yarrow Project is a unprecidented restoration and recreation proposal for this great ship... to cosmetically restore/recreate the boilers and machinery of two of her massive boiler rooms. RMS Queen Elizabeth - WW2

World War 2

RMS Titanic

RMS Titanic was an Olympic-class passenger liner owned by the White Star Line and built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard. At the time of her launching in 1912, she was the largest passenger steamship. During her maiden voyage, Titanic struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and sank two hours and forty minutes later on April 15, 1912. The sinking resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, ranking it as one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history and by far the most famous. The Titanic used some of the most advanced technology available at the time and was popularly believed to be "unsinkable". It was a great shock to many that despite the advanced technology and experienced crew, the Titanic still sank with a great loss of life. The media frenzy about Titanic's famous victims, the legends about what happened on board the ship, the resulting changes to maritime law, and the discovery of the wreck in 1985 by a team led by Robert Ballard have made Titanic persistently famous in the years since. http://en.wikipedia.org/ Music:The Dirk Campbell Band All video clips used in this music video are property of Paramount Pictures, Twentieth-Century Fox Film Corporation, and Lightstorm Entertainment.

Black Sunday: The Tragedy of RMS Titanic

This is the wreck that tiggered my interest in shipwrecks when I was child: the RMS Titanic. Since Titanic is so well known I won't go into much detal. Sunday April 14th 1912: RMS Titanic enoute from Southampton to New York with 2,208 Passengers and Crew plowed into an iceberg at full speed slicing open twelve feet of her hull and flooding five of her watertight compartments. At 2:20 AM April 15 1912, Titanic split in half and plunged into the abyss taking 1,523 passengers and crew members to a watery grave. The final break down of survivors was as thus 1st Class: 335 Aboard, 202 Survived. 2nd Class: 285 Aboard, 114 Survived. Steerage/3rd Class: 706 Aboard(with 79 of them being children) only 178 survived and of the 79 Children in Third Class, 52 went down with the ship. Crew: 885 Aboard, only 215 Survived. Trivia: the picture at 2:23 is Violet Jessope, who was serving as a nurse and stewardess on the Titanic the night it sank and survived the disaster. Ironically, she was also aboard RMS Olympic when it collided with the cruiser HMS Hawke in 1911, and HMHS Britannic when it struck a mine and sank, and once again she survived both. Trivia: Britannic was originally going to be named the Gigantic but the name was changed following the loss of Titanic Sequel Video to RMS Lusitania Song: Sleeping Sun Artist: Nightwish Subject: RMS Titanic

RMS Queen Mary 2 - O Maior Navio do Mundo

A visão de um novo navio transatlântico do século XXI — maior do que qualquer outro que já tinha sido construido antes — começou com a idéia do CEO da Carnival Micky Arison que declarou que a sua companhia comprou a Cunard para criar e construir o RMS Queen Mary 2 e não vice-versa. A Cunard completou um projeto para uma classe nova de navios com as características de 84 000 toneladas e 2 000 passageiros no dia 8 de Junho de 1998, mas imediatamente os revisou ao comparar essas especificações com as 100 000 toneladas do projeto de construção da Carnival Corporation & plc e das 137 200 toneladas da Royal Caribbean International. Seis meses depois, no dia 10 de dezembro a Cunard revelou detalhes do Projeto Queen Mary, o projeto para desenvolver um navio que auxiliaria o RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 nas viagens. Harland and Wolff da Irlanda do Norte, Aker Kværner da Noruega, Fincantieri da Itália, Meyer Werft da Alemanha, e Chantiers de l'Atlantique da França foram convidados a licitar no projeto. Se a construção começasse imediatamente, o navio poderia estar pronto antes de 2002. Mas esta não se realizou até 6 de novembro de 2000 no qual um contrato foi assinado com Chantiers de l'Atlantique, uma subsidiária de Alstom.Esta era a mesma empresa que rivalizou com a Cunard, construindo os navios SS Normandie e SS France da Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. (Companhia Transatlântica Geral). A quilha do Queen Mary 2 foi construida no dia 4 de Julho de 2002, em Saint-Nazaire, França. Aproximadamente 3 000 homens gastaram 8 milhões de horas de trabalho no navio, e um total de 20 000 pessoas seja direta ou indiretamente envolvidas em seu design, construção, e equipagem. Foram grudados 300 000 pedaços de aço em 94 blocos que foram empilhados e então soldados para completar a casca e a super-estrutura juntada ao final. O QM2 foi lançado ao mar em 21 de Março de 2003. Seus testes no mar foram realizados entre 25 e 29 de Setembro e 7 de Novembro de 2003 entre Saint-Nazaire e as ilhas fora da costa de d'Yeu de Ile e Belle-Ile. As fases finais da construção foram arruinadas por um acidente fatal[1] no dia 15 de Novembro de 2003, quando uma passarela desmoronou e um grupo de trabalhadores do estaleiro e de seus parentes que ali estavam, cairam de mais de 15 metros de altura. Das 48 pessoas na passarela, 32 ficaram feridas e 16 acabaram morrendo, incluindo uma criança. A construção foi completada a tempo. Devido ao tamanho do navio, o luxo de seus materiais, e o fato que, devido à natureza dele ser um transatlântico, o QM2 requereu 40% a mais de aço que um navio de cruzeiro padrão; Seu custo final acabou sendo de aproximadamente $300,000 por cabine - quase o dobro do que navios como Voyager of the Seas, Grand Princess e Carnival Conquest. A Cunard entregou o navio pronto em Southampton, Inglaterra no dia 26 de Dezembro de 2003. No dia 8 de Janeiro de 2004 o navio foi nomeado Queen Mary 2 pela neta de sua homônima, a Rainha Elizabeth II. Para construir o Queen Mary 2 a Cunard investiu 880 milhões de dólares, valor que daria para adquirir quatro Boeing 747-400. A maior parte das cabines custa entre 2.000 e 5.000 dólares. O navio tem 345 metros de comprimento. Colocado de pé, seria maior que a Torre Eiffel, que mede 324. Pesa 150 000 toneladas, ou seja 3 vezes a mais que o Titanic, que pesava 46 000. São 17 convéses, totalizando 61 metros de altura, o equivalente a um prédio de vinte andares. Existem 10 restaurantes a bordo, que servem 1,5 milhão de bebidas por ano e 28 toneladas de lagosta. O transatlântico tem casino, teatro com 1100 lugares e até um planetário, o único do gênero em alto mar. São 1310 cabines. Ao todo, o navio tem 2000 WCs. A capacidade total é de 2620 passageiros, e os tripulantes chegam a 1450. O navio tem 30 000 mil pontos de luz e consome energia suficiente para alimentar metade da cidade de Southampton, onde se localizam seus estaleiros. Foi construído para uma vida média de quarenta anos de navegação; Foram usados 2.500 km de cabos elétricos em seu interior; E ainda 500 km de tubos e canalizações; Possui também 8.000 telefones; 5.000 degraus de escada; 1.100 portas contra incêndio e 8.350 extintores automáticos. 33 elevadores, 5 piscinas e 14 bares;

RMS Titanic "SOS"

The final radiotelegraph transmissions from the Titanic. This recording is in all likelihood a simulation, but its exact origin is not known. It is notable for the authentic-sounding rotary spark gap tone and also for the code speed-- rather quick for a hand key! A video of the keying waveform is provided for further analysis.

Before the Lusitania: The Tragedy of RMS Empress of Ireland

May 29 1914, one year before the Sinking of the Lusitania a disaster of equal tragedy occured. RMS Empress of Ireland, a passenger liner on route to Liverpool England with 1,477 Passengers and crew, collided with the norwegian collier Storstad in a thick fog bank. Fourteen minutes later the mortally wounded Empress of Ireland plunged into the abyss taking 1,012, including 314 of the 318 children onboard, to their graves. Sadly the tragedy of the Empress of Ireland would soon be overshadowed by the outbreak of World War I. Trivia: One of the Empress's survivors, a stoker in the boiler room, claimed to have survived the sinking of the Titanic, and would go on to surivie the sinking of the Lusitania a year later. Song: Sleeping Sun Artist: Nightwish Subject: RMS Empress of Ireland

RMS Lusitania - Nearer My God To Thee

On May 7th, 1915, the Cunard Liner Lusitania was steaming past the old Head of Kinsale on the Irish coast. In a heinous act, the Imperial German U-Boat, U-20, fired a torpedo at the Lusitania. Two explosions shook the vessel and she would succumb to her wounds. Within eighteen minutes, the mighty RMS Lusitania would slide beneath the waves, taking 1198 to their deaths.
