Paul Koontz: Tourist snapshots from North Korea
http://www.ted.com While in Asia in 2007, TEDster Paul Koontz got the priceless chance to spend a few days in North Korea. He brought his two kids -- and his camera, capturing both quotidian detail (like the military bearing of a lonely traffic warden) and the grand spectacle leading up to the Mass Games. It's a rare perspective on a culture we know far too little about. |

Haegue Yang | CI08 Life on Mars
Born: 1971, Seoul, South Korea Lives and Works: Berlin and Seoul Haegue Yang's art resists a defining medium, engaging instead with a range of means, from wall drawing to books, sculpture, installation, moving image, and photography. The oblique self-analysis that Yang uses as both strategy and substance in her "placeless" art is symptomatic of someone who has lived for many years outside of her native country and whose life and work entail the high-mobility and in-transit condition common to many contemporary artists operating internationally. This acute sense of provisional belonging--being at home in what is foreign and feeling foreign in what is home--lends Yang's work a hair-trigger sensitivity for the inflections of quotidian experience as well as public and private territories. She has described her practice in terms of a poetic activism. Three Kinds (2008) employs commonplace objects such as venetian blinds, lights, and mirrors to create an atmosphere of dramatic intimacy. Though the specific point of conceptual departure remains obscured--Yang relates this and similar installations to abstract portraits of various individuals from Asian and European history--the interaction of the elements might be seen as a stand-in for human relations. --- Life on Mars, the 2008 Carnegie International Widely known as one of the pre-eminent international surveys of contemporary art in the world, the Carnegie International was founded at the behest of industrialist Andrew Carnegie in 1896. With the Venice Biennale, the Carnegie International is the oldest such exhibition in the world. Titled "Life on Mars", the 2008 Carnegie International will focus on the increasingly relevant question of what it means to be human in the world today. The exhibition presents work by 40 artists who investigate particular aspects of the human condition, moving along paths that are both introspective and worldly while poetically traversing the dramatic spectrum from tragedy to comedy. |

Brawl Funny Follies
My fellow Brawlers, I give to you a special presentation. It's a unique compilation of the humorous side of Brawl, titled "Funny Follies." When I Brawl, I'm always hoping for the match to end in some form of a Fantastic Finish. About 2 days in a week will produce material for a possible Fantastic Finish; and out of those possibilities, about 40% will qualify. The other 60% are of close finishes that were slightly epic, or somewhat helped. In simpler terms, Fantastic Finishes are rare. This video shows just the endings of those slightly Fantastic Finishes, mixed in with mid-Brawl scenes that are worth showing. Also thrown into the mix are contrived Brawl scenes, which can be easily identified by their being offline with 3-stock human players. It took me a while to put it all together, so I'd like for everyone to see it. Custom stages included in this video are: -Kara Kame -Ventura Highway -Big Board -Gurgle Gulch -Awsme (by themaster1359) -Rogueport Pub -Hacienda Hotel -Pizza! (by TheDarkPlumber) -Waveway -Green Plant -Bamboozle Town -Big Blue Hill -Quotidian Realm -Cobblestone Town -Derailed Express Guest appearances by: -themaster1359 -JordyOhYea Enjoy, my friends! |

Interview with Fady Joudah
Fady Joudah was the 2007 winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award for The Earth in the Attic. In his poems Joudah explores big themes—identity, war, religion, what we hold in common—while never losing sight of the quotidian, the specific. Contest judge Louise Glück describes the poet in her Foreword as that strange animal, the lyric poet in whom circumstance and professionhave compelled obsession with large social contexts and grave national dilemmas. She finds in his poetry an incantatory quality and concludes, These are small poems, many of them, but the grandeur of conception is inescapable. The Earth in the Attic is varied, coherent, fierce, tender; impossible to put down, impossible to forget. Published by Yale University Press, April 2008. Fady Joudah is a Palestinian-American doctor and has been a member of Doctors Without Borders since 2001. His translation of Mahmoud Darwishs recent poetry, The Butterflys Burden, received the 2008 Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation. He currently resides in Houston, Texas. |

Feeding Desire
Like a history of civilization told through forks, the current exhibit "Feeding Desire" (through 29 October 2006) at New York's Cooper-Hewitt design museum traces the evolution of utensils from 1500-2005. Including highlights like pre-18th century sharkskin-handled knives (used when inns didn't provide flatware for guests), and pieces by well-known Scandinavian designers such as Georg Jensen and Arne Jacobsen that exemplify the Danish modern aesthetic, the show reveals the way these quotidian objects of design are also some of the most emotional and intimate. Cool Hunting Video's 47th episode takes you on a personal guided tour of "Feeding Desire" with Cooper-Hewitt curator Sarah Coffin, who shares her knowledge and passion of Cooper-Hewitt's extensive collection. |

De Keersmaeker - Violin Phase PART 1 OF 2
For best quality, click this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5KCMccPnww&fmt=18 Then close the previous window or tab. Music: Steve Reich, Violin Phase (1967) Director: Thierry De Mey Dancer: Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker The solo "Violin Phase" was created in 1981 and became part of a larger choreography called "Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich". This solo was to be performed by Anne Teresa herself. In 2001, film-maker and long-time Rosas collaborator, Thierry De Mey, filmed a performance of Violin Phase in the middle of a wood, using shots taken from the top of a 20m high crane. Through her footprints, the film reveals De Keersmaeker's choreographic patterns as she dances on smooth, white sand. Unfortunately, I had to split the video into two parts because of the time limit on Youtube. Go to my video response underneath the vidscreen for the second part if you're not watching this as a playlist. __________ Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker: "From the very beginning there has always been - and this at the very heart of the work - the tension field between the beauty of mathematical abstraction and the expressive potential of the body. The memory of all concrete experiences the body can carry, including the most dramatic and the most quotidian ones were always a starting point, sometimes visible, sometimes not. To combine these experiences, this "dust" with formal constructions, moving architecture, ways of organizing time and space in a horizontal and vertical way was from the very beginning my main interest. And still is today... I consider this as a way of developing different strategies in the relationship between dance and music." (Fragment from an interview with Steve Reich) ____________ Violin Phase is a solo. The playfulness of a little girl appears again in the dancing. The girl makes squared circles, finding pleasure in swirling her dress, swinging her leg up and down like the pendulum of a clock. Her bent leg drags her whole body in a spin, she waves her arms wildly, ducking and jumping up again, turning round and round to see how long it takes before one gets dizzy from the movement. In this fashion, she moves across the entire stage in diagonals and circles, the different variations of the vocabulary elements quickly succeeding one another. Clear-cut sentences are ended with a period. Every word is carefully chosen, in strong contrast with the reckless game of exhausting oneself by non-stop dancing. (Fragment taken from a review that was published in The Drama Review, 1984) _________ |

Kishimojin Vow In Lotus Sutra
Thereupon there were female rakshasas, the first named Lamba, the second named Vilamba, the third named Crooked Teeth, the fourth named Flowery Teeth, the fifth named Black Teeth, the sixth named Many Tresses, the seventh named Insatiable, the eighth named Necklace Holder, the ninth named Kunti, the tenth named Spirit Snatcher. These ten female rakshasas, together with the Mother of Demon Sons [Kishimojin] and her children and followers, all went to the Buddha and with one voice said to the Buddha: "World Honored One! We, too, would protect those who read and recite, receive and keep the Law-Flower Sutra, and rid them of corroding care. If any spy for the shortcomings of these teachers of the Law, we will prevent their obtaining any chance." Whereupon in the presence of the Buddha they delivered the following spell: "Iti me, iti me, iti me, iti me, iti me; ni me, ni me, ni me, ni me, ni me; ruhe, ruhe, ruhe, ruhe, [ruhe]; stuhe, stuhe, stuhe, stuhe, stuhe [svaha]. "Let troubles come on our heads, rather than on the teachers of the Law; neither yakshas, nor hungry ghosts...; nor fevers, whether for a single day, or quotidian, or tertian, or quartan, or weekly, or unremitting fevers; whether in male form, or female form, or form of youth, or form of a maiden, even in dreams shall ever cause distress. Whereupon before the Buddha they spoke thus in verse: "Whoever resists our spell And troubles a preacher, May his head be split in seven Like an arjaka sprout; May his doom be that of a parricide, His retribution that of an oil-expresser Or a deceiver with [false] measures and weights, Or of Devadatta who brought schism into the Samgha; He who offends these teachers of the Law, Such shall be his retribution." After these female rakshasas had uttered this stanza, they addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-honoured One! We ourselves will also protect those who receive and keep, read and recite, and practice this sutra, and give them ease of mind, freedom from corroding care and from all poisons." The Buddha addressed the rakshasa women: "Good, good! Even if you are only able to protect those who receive and keep the name of the Law-Flower, your happiness will be beyond calculation; how much more if you protect those who perfectly receive, keep, and pay homage to the sutra! You and your followers should protect such teachers of the Law as these." ~The Lotus Sutra, Dharanis Chapter 26 |

John Mccain is notorious for skipping senate votes
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) became the most absent member of the Senate. According to the Washington Post's votes database, McCain has "missed 367 votes (61.4%) during the current Congress." In fact, CQ reports today that McCain hasn't voted in the Senate since April 8. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) last voted on June 4. http://thinkprogress.org/2008/06/25/mccain-hasnt-voted-in-the-senate-since-april-8/ Between April 12 and May 24 of last year, John McCain missed 46 consecutive votes in the U.S. Senate. In fact, McCain missed more than half of all Senate votes last year, enough to disqualify him from the infamous National Journal rankings that purported to find Barack Obama the most liberal senator. Now, we understand that McCain had elsewhere to be. We don't expect senators running for president to be around for every vote to name a post office or confirm a judge. Both Obama and Hillary Clinton missed their fair share of votes, though they managed to make it back to Capitol Hill more frequently than McCain did. But the business of legislating doesn't stop just because it's an election year, or at least it shouldn't. Senators do have an obligation to return from the campaign trail in order to cast votes on the major issues pending before Congress. Which is why it's distressing that John McCain announced that he'd be skipping a vote on the LiebermanWarner climate-change bill. McCain has long sought to portray himself as a rare breed of green Republican. But, as Bradford Plumer has written, McCain's rhetorical commitment to the environment hasn't been matched by an interest in the quotidian business of conducting negotiations and building coalitions in order to actually move important legislation ("Grand Canyon," March 12). McCain's decision to skip the vote on Lieberman-Warner only strengthens that conclusion. Not to mention, McCain's position on the merits of the bill is somewhere between muddled and incoherent. A month ago, McCain told reporters he hoped it would pass; three weeks later, he abruptly changed course and announced his opposition, on the grounds that it doesn't offer sufficient aid to the nuclear- power industry. http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=16784547-6657-42f2-911b-0259df88bf4b Two weeks ago it was reported that John McCain's campaign approved a package of enforcement-only bills drafted by Senate Republicans to use immigration as a wedge issue. [washingtontimes.com, 3/6/08] The package was described by the LA Times as "the hardest-hitting package of immigration enforcement measures seen yet -- one that would require jail time for illegal immigrants caught crossing the border, make it harder for them to open bank accounts and compel them to communicate in English when dealing with federal agencies." [LA Times, 3/4/08] http://www.verticalnews.com/newsletters/Politics-and-Government-Week/2008-03-24/6003GP.html Earlier this month, House leaders struck a deal to push forward with Sen. Jim Webb's (D-VA) GI Bill, which expanded generous educational benefits for veterans. The House deal also included a provision allowing troops to transfer the benefits to family members. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was one of the most vocal opponents of Webb's bill, claiming it was too generous and would lead to a drop in military retention. Yet when the House deal was announced, McCain tried to take credit for it: With the addition of the transferability provisions sought by Senators Graham, Burr, myself and others to give service members the right to transfer earned G.I. Bill benefits to spouses and children, we will have achieved in offering vastly improved educational benefit. As if trying to steal credit for Webb's GI Bill wasn't bad enough, McCain yesterday skipped the Senate vote on the legislation, which passed 92-6. The only other senator not present for the vote was Ted Kennedy (D-MA), who is battling a brain tumor. http://thinkprogress.org/2008/06/27/mccain-gi-bill-skip/?sortby=toprated |

The People Who Has Been Eaten by Trains
I've produced this 5:30 minute music video which I spent 4 months creating. This being a project of personal interest for me meant that I conceived the idea for the video, and shot and edited it myself. The film is completely shot in London, using images that are familiar to the quotidian of modern life. In conceptualizing this I took inspiration from both the mechanical and organic world. In short the film is based on the idea that the city is like a huge organism, in which we are the blood cells that merely go about life as shadows of our human selves. |
