Quiriguá es un sitio de la Cultura Maya, ocupado desde el 400 DC. Localizada en Izabal, Guatemala. Quiriguá es un sitio impresionante del Clásico Tardío mejor conocida por sus Estelas y Altares esculpidos (33 en total) en un estilo único por su fineza. Fue enemiga de Copán, por el dominio de las rutas de comercio del Río Motagua, que conduce al Mar Caribe. La Mayoría de las Estelas fueron erigidas durante los sesenta años de reinado de Butz' Tiliw o Cauac Cielo, El más grande gobernante de Quiriguá, por lo que no es de sorprender que 7 de las 9 Estelas monumentales sean de él. En el 738 DC, Cauac Cielo capturó al Rey de Copán, Waxaklahun Ubah K'awil o 18 Conejo, decapitándolo en la Gran Plaza, terminando con la larga dominación de Copán sobre Quiriguá. Su Estela C hace referencia al inicio de la 5a era Maya (13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahaw 8 Kumk'u o Agosto 13, 3114 AC).
