Hutong Chronicles - Mike Meyer: Danwei TV Hard Hat Show

Southwest of Qianmen and Tiananmen Square in Beijing is a maze of narrow alleyways stretching from the theater and market street of Dazhalan all the way west to Liulichang, Beijing's antique and traditional Chinese art supplies street. In the Qing Dynasty, this area was the city's commercial quarter where travelling tradesmen and local commoners who were not allowed to live in the Manchurian City (sometimes called Tartar City in English language accounts) north of Qianmen. It was also the place where Beijing opera really took off, and the area of choice for theaters, tea houses, inns, opium dens and brothels. As Beijing prepares for the Olympics, this historic quarter's future is uncertain. This episode of the Hard Hat Show is an interview with American writer Mike Meyer, who is living in the area and writing a book about it, to be published next year by Walker / Bloomsbury. He has been living in a small room in a communal courtyard, volunteer teaching at schools, and getting to know the community. He tells us about the history and future of the neighborhood, and the problem of preserving the area in the face of Beijing's hyperspeed urban development. This video is also available at Danwei TV, where there are links to other ways to see the video, including an option to download the entire video as a Quicktime file. The ancient street of Qianmen in Beijing has reopened just in time for the Beijing Olympic Games after the restoration completed.

Olympic street launch delayed

http://www.scmp.com/video We take a sneak preview of Beijing's ultimate gentrification project - Qianmen Street. With its history dating back over 300 years, 9.2 billion yuan was spent restoring the street to its former glory in time for the Olympics. But officials revealed that it will not be open before the Games begin.

Beijing - Tiananmen Square - Raising the Flag - China

Tiananmen Square stands on the central north-south axis of the old Imperial city. In fact, there was no square here during the time of the emperors, only a wide boulevard, the Imperial Way, lined with state offices. The Imperial Way ran from the Gate of Heavenly Peace south to Qianmen (Front Gate), which still stands guard at the southern end of Tiananmen Square. Qianmen was one of the nine great gates when Beijing possessed its city walls. (They were removed in 1958.) The Imperial Way was the southern axis of the city, stretching from the Forbidden City all the way to the Temple of Heaven. Qianmen, which dates back nearly 500 years, remains a city landmark. Chinese Folk Song on Sanxian 中国民间音乐 三弦

a blind musician in the gubeikou region of Beijing, near the Great Wall. Played on a Sanxian (3 string). I believe the song is about returning to Qianmen. Can someone verify this or write the lyrics? I can't get everything.
