Single Eddy Adjustment
Vertically oscillating mesh grid forms a homogeneous patch of mixed fluid within a linearly stratified tank of salt water. The entire tank is rotating and as the patch adjusts due to buoyancy forcing, a anti-cyclonic geostrophic eddy forms. This phenomenon is thought to drive horizontal dispersion at pycnocline depths in ocean shelf waters. Video taken as part of the Vortical Mode Stirring Project at UMass Dartmouth's School for Marine Science and Technology. Grant Stuart |
