THE PROLES on CAPITAL CHAOS 2004

THE PROLES on CAPITAL CHAOS 2004 @ Old Ironsides~Sacramento, CA proles n. A proletarian. "If there is hope... it lies in the proles" (George Orwell). http://www.theproles.com/ The Proles are: Justyn Bartels (guitar and vocals), Dan Taylor (drums and vocals), and Jeff Fisher (bass). http://www.myspace.com/theprolesmusic To fill in the blanks, if you were looking for the next band to take the world by storm, look no further than Sacramento-based band, The Proles. With their brand new line-up, featuring a dual-vocal assault and infectious harmonies, this band hopes to re-invent themselves and start a scene unto themselves. http://capitalchaos.net/ The Proles are a Sacramento-based trio that have been causing quite a stir in the Sacramento Valley and Bay Area since their inception in 2000. After releasing their debut CD, 'Index,' the band received rave reviews from across the United States for their angular pop and songwriting sensibilities. 'Good In Black & White,' the band's sophomore album, was released to critical acclaim and was picked as an Editor's music pick on CD BABY for two weeks straight. The Proles have opened for numerous national acts including The Killers, Grandaddy, John Doe, Quasi, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Datsuns, Pleasure Forever, Mike Watt, The Mother Hips, Elefant, The Raveonettes, and countless others. Their debut was serviced to CMJ's Top 300 stations and received considerable airplay (even charting on KEXP's coveted Top 60 list!).

The Proles - Queen

One of my first videos for my good friends The Proles.

CNN is mindmush for the consumption of braindead proles..

CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News are state controlled media outlets akin to the Telescreen from George Orwell's semi-fictional novel "1984". 2+2=5.

The Proles in 1988

One of the greatest nights of my life in 1988 with some of my excellent friends Chris Robinson on Bass Trevor Dayman on Drums / Vocal Andrew Beckett Sax and me Singing and Guitaring The Proles were a Rock and Roll band with energy. We played some gigs around Kitchener Waterloo until Trevor moved and we reformed without Andrew and introduced Pat Inglis as the new Proles drummer covering Southern Ontario and grabbing Second place at the AM109 Future Rocks Contest (Beat out by Shannon Lyon and Strange Days). The Proles were recorded on the CKWR compilation album "A Giant Leap of Faith #2" with the track, Terra Firma.

Proles R' Us

A demonstration of just how similar the majority of humans today are in comparison with the Proles in George Orwell's 1984... The overt message from the media and 1984 is that we are the Proles. We are just as much, if not more, enslaved by the self destructive habits which are seen in today's society. The implied messages from the media and 1984 are that there are many aspects of both societies which are self destructive, and yet they are all encouraged and are seen as the norm. This could be due to the ignorance of the majority of the population just as in 1984 with the Proles, where the majority do not even realize that they are being oppressed and they continue their day to day lives, merely "just doing it". One would have to ask, how has this mass oppression been accomplished in 1984 as well as our own world? Some possible explanations would be that by making the majorities of humans want the lifestyle which includes all of the tools of distraction. This would cause them to not only be distracted by the tools themselves, but moreover by the constant pursuit to be able to afford them and get them in their lives. This lifestyle that is marketed is made to be seen as an unattainable dream which it (ex: the lottery). Distraction has been made to seem as the most fun pastime. Whether it is from work, schools, or relationships, many frequent "holidays" are taken in our minds through these methods made available and extremely well marketed by the media in both worlds. What is the reason behind such media in both book and reality? In 1984, the government has decided that the only objective of the proles is that they are to only work and reproduce. This could be due to the fact that if they were made any more intelligent, they would begin questioning the oppressive government policies. In real life, the overt reasons behind such advertisements are money. Money, as a rule of thumb, is easily extracted from people who wish to escape from reality. This media has increased my understanding and insight into the novel by enlightening me as to how the oppression and the control of the lives of the Proles is accomplished. In addition, I could better understand how the characters live and what struggles they have...The struggle that the Proles face against the innumerable tools of distraction are none existent. The majority do not even feel like there is something missing in their lives due to the countless avenues there are to forget their discontents, whether it be through watching TV, drinking or gambling, all these weapons of mass distraction have become the norm and are not seen for what they really are.

1984's Proles

I just finished reading George Orwell's 1984. O'Brien insists that the proles cannot overcome the power of the Party. I think, however, that since the Party largely ignores them, the Proles will not fear the Party so much that they cannot fight back. Their population advantage makes their victory certain. PS this is very boring and pointless...but at least its only a minute or so Music from Les Miserables
