ULYSSES VERSUS POLYPHEMUS 1 - ODYSSEY 1954

A movie adaptation of Homer's second epic, that talks about Ulysses' efforts to return to his home after the end of ten years of war. This is a scene with Ulysses versus Polyphemus.

Spore Polyphemus

The Cyclopean son of the Sea god Poseidon, Polyphemus lived in a cave on an island in the Mediterranean where many other Cyclopes lived. Polyphemus kept a flock of sheep for whom he cared for greatly, despite him being a fearsome monster. A prophet Cyclops named Telemus lived on Polyphemus's island, who warned him that he would lose his sight to a man named Odysseus. When Odysseus and his men were sailing home to Ithaca, they landed on the Cyclopes' island, where went into Polyphemus's cave and waited for him (unaware he was a Cyclops) to come home. Polyphemus came back to the cave and asked if the men were travelers or pirates. Odysseus told him that they were sailing home from Troy. Polyphemus then grabbed two of Odysseus's men and smashed them against the rocks, splattering their brains on the cave floor, and ate the men. Odysseus was tempted to kill the Cyclops in his sleep, but realized that then they wouldn't be able to push aside the boulder which Polyphemus used as his door. The next day, after rolling aside the boulder and letting his sheep out, Polyphemus left the cave and rolled the boulder back in front of the cave, trapping Odysseus and his men again. While waiting for the giant's return, Odysseus thought up a plan. Him and his men sharpened Polyphemus's huge olive tree branch until he and his sheep came back. The Cyclops then killed and ate two more of Odysseus's men in the same manner. Odysseus walked over to Polyphemus and offered him some strong wine. Polyphemus drank it quickly and asked for more. After finishing the wine, Polyphemus asked Odysseus his name. "Nobody is my name," replied Odysseus. "I like you Nobody," said Polyphemus, "As a gift, I shall eat you last. Hahaha!" That night, Polyphemus fell into a drunken sleep, thanks to Odysseus's wine. Meanwhile, Odysseus and his men took the spear that they had made and stuck in in the burning coals until the point glowed with heat. Odysseus and a few men carried the spear over to Polyphemus, thrusting it into his one eye. Polyphemus bellowed as blood gurgled out of his eye. He walked out of his cave and howled. After being woken up by his howls, the other Cyclopes asked him why he was in pain. "Nobody hurt me!" Polyphemus yelled angrily. "Well if nobody hurt you, then a god must be causing your pain, and therefore we cannot do anything," the Cyclopes said. The next morning, Odysseus, and his men hid under the bellies of Polyphemus's sheep. While they were being let out, the blind Cyclops rubbed the sheeps' backs to make sure Odysseus and his men were not riding out, but he failed to check their undersides. When safe at his ship Odyseus cried "Foolish Cyclops! Tell your men that it was Odysseus, son of Laertes, sacker of cities who blinded you!" Polyphemus, remembering the prophecy asked Odysseus to come back to his cave to receive the Cyclopes gifts, but Odysseus just laughed. Bellowing in fury, Polyphemus through a huge boulder at Odysseus's ship, narrowly missing. As Odysseus sailed away, Polyphemus asked his father Poseidon to curse Odysseus and his men to not let them reach Ithaca without many hardships. Sorry, he walks funny.

Horseshoe crab - Limulus polyphemus

This video was taken in Prague aquarium. The horseshoe crab, horsefoot, king crab, or sauce-pan (Limulus polyphemus, formerly known as Limulus cyclops, Xiphosura americana, Polyphemus occidentalis) is a chelicerate arthropod. Despite its name, it is more closely related to spiders, ticks, and scorpions than to crabs.

Polyphemus Caterpillar Cocooning - Time Lapse

My daughters are raising a bunch of Polyphemus caterpillars for school. We hatched them, fed them, and now they are starting to cocoon! It's been a neat experience. I hope to do a time lapse of the emergence as well, so stay tuned!

I can't wait till they make a cocoon and turn into the moths.

Odysseus VS Polyphemus

School video project about Odysseus VS Polyphemus (Oh and as a side note. I know that there are spelling and punctuation errors. They've already been fixed in the version to go to school but thanks for letting me know!) A good portion of my next few days will be dedicated to sitting here in front of my computer banging my head against the table. I know this to be fact because I've already spent several hours here already battling a terrible foe. Why would someone engage in such madness you might ask? The answer is as simple as it is insidiously evil. CHRISTMAS VACATION SCHOOL PROJECT Dun dun dun!!!!!! Yes that's right I am currently engaged in one of the most frightening parental nightmares known to modern times the Christmas Vacation School Project. This year's gala event consists of turning 3 minutes and 32 seconds of usable raw pieced together cookie puppet footage into a 7-10 minute finished video on Odysseus VS The Cyclops. With fade in's and fade out's as well as some creative use of textual story line insertion I think I may just be able to do it. Normally this would be the kids job, but in all fairness to the boy child I have the software and hardware to be able to do it at my house. So I offered to fall on the sword for him this time around. So after having battled the monster for a few hours this afternoon I am now familiar with the tools I will need to defeat my foe, Roxio Creator 9. I have gathered the necessary arms. For sustenance, oodles of holiday left-overs. For strength, 1ea bag orange chewy candy slices, 1ea bag cherry chewy candy slices, and the rich chocolaty cakey goodness of several packs of swiss rolls. For stamina numerous bottles of Mt. Dew. And finally for inspiration Metallica, Mega Death, Rob Zombie, and The Matrix soundtrack. Thus fortified for the coming battle I am renewed and prepared to fight again!

Limulus polyphemus - Aquarium Finisterrae
