The Last Cannibals - Papua New Guinea

July 2006 We journey deep into the heart of West Papua to track down perhaps the last remaining cannibals in the world. The Korowai have lived by the same customs for 10,000 years. "It's normal. I don't feel sad or anything", states one tribesman, describing how he killed and ate his friend. The Korowai believe that deaths are caused by evil spirits. When a person dies, a frightening witch-hunt begins to find the person possessed and kill and eat him. Even children are vulnerable. A six-year-old boy has fallen under suspicion because his parents died suddenly. His uncle fears the boy will be killed when he reaches puberty. "The chances he'll survive are pretty small", states remote tribes expert Paul Raffaele. His only hope is that civilisation catches up with the Korowai in time to save him.

George Telek - West Papua

Telek is a legendary singer in Papua New Guinea. "West Papua" expresses a yearning for his countrymen west of the New Guinea border to be free from Indonesian rule. West Papua is occupied by Indonesia solely on the basis of a sham "election" held in 1969, laughingly called the Act of Free Choice, in which a small representation of the total indigenous West Papuan population were threatened to have their tongues cut out if they did not vote for Indonesian sovereignty. This scandal was actually approved by the UN, who all these years later refuse to take any steps at all to rectify their grave mistake. The West Papuan people have been living under a regime of Indonesian oppression and genocide for more than 40 years, and it is only now that the world is taking notice. This recording was produced by David Bridie. Footage taken from "Land of the Morning Star" by Mark Worth. This video (plus many others) appears on the new CD/DVD re-release of "Tabaran" by Not Drowning, Waving. West Papua documentary (Part 1) - never screened outside UK

THE AUSTRALIAN AND INDONESIAN GOVERNMENTS DO NOT WANT YOU TO SEE THIS DOCUMENTARY This is part 1 of an excellent and rare TV documentary about West Papua. A year on from its original UK screening it still has not been broadcast in any other country. In 2006 reporter Evan Williams gained access, on a tourist visa, to West Papua - a country to which journalists and foreign observers are flatly refused entry by the Indonesian government. After three weeks dodging Indonesian officials and police to gather interviews and information, he filed this report for Channel 4's "Unreported World" series. Part 1 (9'28"): • We meet a group of tribal elders, some of whom have travelled for days, who congregate especially to tell the world media about widespread incidents of Indonesian killing and brutality in their native villages. • The pretext for Evan Williams' visit to West Papua is the Wamena Festival, at which the local governor's speech proclaims Indonesia as "the ultimate in diversity". But for the locals, overrun by Indonesian oppression and largely outnumbered by subsidised Indonesian immigrants, is it diversity or occupation? • Williams meets a man whose parents and friends were killed by the Indonesians and who has been fleeing the army, hiding out, for five years. He is led to a village in which the locals are mourning the deaths of relatives killed or missing since the March 2006 protests. Channel 4 Original broadcast - October 20 2006

Huli Wigmen - Papua New Guinea

March 2006 The PNG Huli men are said to be the fiercest warriors in the world. But they have a surprising soft side -- an obsession with hair. Boys spend years constructing elaborate wigs. "It is very important for a young Huli boy to have a wig. That's why the boys go to wig school", explains Huli Harold Hayake. To grow strong, healthy hair, the young men live together in a monastic lifestyle under the guidance of a wig master. Only after their wig is ready can they marry.

West Papua - Papua New Guinea

Nov 2003 The Baliem Valley in the highlands of West Papua remains one of the remotest corners of the planet. Sealed off from the world by its geography and more recently by the Indonesian government. The latest phase of an Indonesian military campaign to eradicate the Papuan independence movement and its armed wing the OPM, is being fought against the highlanders. Around 5,000 people have been driven away from their villages into the bush, many have been killed. We profile events with film smuggled out from this remote Pacific warzone.

Papua: Indonesia's silent war - 29 May 2008

Indonesia's eastern-most province of Papua is rich in natural resources, but its people remain the poorest in the country. For decades Papua was the scene of a low-level independence struggle, but years after the fighting ended, tens of thousands of Indonesian soldiers remain deployed in the province. Al Jazeera correspondent Step Vaessen reports from a region where many residents still live in a state of fear.

Rascals - Papua New Guinea

March 1995 We look at the cultural roots of crime in PNG, where quarrels have traditionally been settled in a vociferous, hands-on way. 'Drive fast, never stop and get someone else to open your gates' is the best survival tip you'll get in Papau New Guinea. The jungle teems with violent criminals, or 'Rascals' - highwaymen who, like Robin Hood, share their booty with their clan. We capture a hold-up live on film, including the advance pep-talk given by the band leader. One styles himself on Rambo. Another inhales smoke to make himself invisible. Rape, car-jacking, police shootings and arson have driven tourism and investment away. We meet the owner of a coffee plantation with his barrage of protective security measures. Traditional attitudes now threaten to force the country into a state of total anarchy.

The country's rugged natural settings are home to a staggering array of wildlife, including more than 21,000 species of higher plants, 200 species of mammals, and 700 species of birds. Papua New Guinea's indigenous clans are linguistically just as diverse; more than 800 languages are spoken within the nation's borders. These numerous clans also hold the key to conserving both their cultural and natural wealth of their country, specifically because they control approximately 90 percent of the nation's territory through a system of traditional land tenure. Because almost all of the land in Papua New Guinea is owned by its people, and not by the government, conservation efforts need to be approved and enforced by the local landowners. Crater Mountain is one of these landowner and NGO cooperative conservation initiatives in PNG.

Secrets & Lies in West Papua - Indonesia

Oct 2002 As seven Indonesian soldiers stand trial for the murder of a West Papuan independence leader, we investigate claims that the military was also involved in the killing of two Americans last year.

101 East - Papua's Aids crisis - 6 Nov 08 - Part 2

Authorities in the Indonesian capital Jakarta say the infection rate in Papua is 15 times the national average. But field workers say that figure could be closer to 50 times. Although the Indonesian government say they have the problem under control, it is thought that there are now many more Hiv positive housewives than sex workers.

Wild Boards - Papua New Guinea

Feb 2007 Before they step foot in the water, members of the Sunset Surf Club in PNG have to make their own boards. It's the only place in the world where the surfboards come straight from the jungle. "We didn't have enough boards for all the kids so they started cutting up trees to make surfboards themselves", recalls club founder Stephen Tekwei. The perfect board requires the right tree, known locally as a Tapa. It takes just a few hours to carve a surfboard but it's not ready to surf until traditional village markings are applied.

Papua AIDS - PNG

April 2008 With up to 3% of the population infected by HIV/AIDS, the disease is running rife in Papua. With this figure set to double, campaigners are calling for international attention. Local leader, Agus Alua, of the Papuan People's Assembly claims "this issue is as bad as genocide in West Papua." However, reports indicate that the disease has spread as a result of high-risk sexual behaviour that can be tracked back to brothels, illegal fishermen and tradesmen, both attracting prostitution. So who organises the prostitution? "It cannot survive without support from the military or police" says Agus.
