Kiribati Banaba Ocean Island
In 1979 the Phosphate mine reserve on Banaba was depleted and the year before the Kiribati people were allowed to become Independent from the British. You can't help but feel cynical about the way the Colonialist I-Matang (Pakeha) treated the world. I visited Banaba in 2000, its like a ghost island with overgrown mansions and empty brick houses. |

Maui and the Sun (New Zealand Sign Language) NZSL
(Translation) This story is called "Maui". It is about the sun moving fast across the sky. One man makes it go slow. Long ago before Pakeha came to Aotearoa, the Maori lived here. Back then the days were very fast. The people could not complete their work as there was not enough light in a day. There is one man named Maui (his sign name derives from his long hair tied back into a topknot) who a strong and brave Maori. He has many brothers and he calls them over for a meeting. He tells them that the days are to fast and that he will fix the problem by making the sun slower. He asks his brothers what they think of his plan. The brothers are not happy with the plan as they believe it would be impossible to achieve. They think that the sun is too hot and they will all get burnt. Maui tells them he has a plan to deal with this problem. He asks them if they know of Flax (a native plant) and how it can be made into strong rope by weaving. The brothers listen but they are still disbelieving and not happy with the plan. However, they eventually agree and begin to collect flax leaves in order to make strong ropes. Maui then uses his magic to enchant the flax bindings that will be used to trap the sun. Maui and his brothers set of towards where the sun rises, at its home. They walk at night and sleep at day so that the sun cannot see them. They travel through vast forests for a long time. Then they walk across plains, when suddenly the ground begins to get hotter. Soon the ground is to hot to walk on. Maui knows that they are close to the sun now. Maui is first to see the pit when the sun rises from and he tells him brothers to quickly build a wall. Maui watches the pit as his brothers build the wall. Suddenly the sun rises and Maui shous to his brother to take cover. The sun emerges from the pit, it's firey eyes rising first. The brothers are tempted to strike early as the sun's eyes appear, but Maui tells them to wait until they can see its teeth. Finally the sun's white teeth rise from the pit and Maui and his brothers jump from behind their shelters to attack the sun together. The sun is caught by their ropes and cannot move. Maui leaps up to the sun and uses his enchanted grandmother's jawbone to beat the sun into submission. He beats the sun until it is nearly dead, but Maui does not intend to kill it. Instead he wounds it so it may only move slowly across the sky. Maui tells his brothers to stop the attack and the sun limps into the sky, trailing the magic ropes with it. As a result, the short days where work could not be completed are no more; instead, the days are now long and people can see and play the whole day long. |

march on freedom
Saturday 27 October ... the march in Auckland, one of a number around Aotearoa, protesting at the imprisonment of 18 people, Pakeha, Maori, activists, environmentalists, anarchists, ...the people who 'rark it up'....the people who are the blood and tissue of our Democracy. Aotearoa IS NOT the States or the U.K where public dissent and activism are in the final stages of being classified as Terror...everybody WAKEUP and let the Police and the Government know ..don't imprison our people,... we are watching! |

Pa site (i fail at archaeology) messed up by road
Approx' 6MB runtime approx' 3.5 minutes. Indiana jones & Lara Croft make this look alot more exciting than it looks here. The ancient Maori of N.Z. lived largley in a state of perpetual war & so their villages were often built inside forts called Pa. This Pa site has been carved up on one side by people building a road but you can still see where it was once by the ditchs/trenchs dug halfway around, also the sea is slowly eroding the cliffs around it. While i didn't find any real artifacts i did find some rock that was probobly carried from somewhere inland as the coastal stone in this area was too soft to make hardwearing tools. This area was uninhabited by white ppl from around 1915 to 1972 so it is suprising to find so many pakeha (white ppl) relics such as bottles & cans |

South Pacific Spoken Word Piece
New Zealand born "tusitala" of Samoan & pakeha descent, Rosanna Raymonds art ranges from fashion pieces playing part in her staged performances, pieces spoken piecing together the past to the present (& a heritage to another), & tampered-with photography placed on museum walls. I came across this piece while surfing the net & was intrigued immediately by her use of polynesian myths and her slick word play. Rosanna Raymond is truly an inspiration. This video includes various pictures of Rosanna Raymond set to a recording of one of her pieces, "Meet you in Hawaiiki," produced by Sarah Robins. (which can be found at http://www.pasifikastyles.org.uk/artists/rosanna-raymond.php) |

Bonfire night, Treason and Thermite
Because New Zealand has yet to throw off the queen of England and become a republic we half heartedly celebrate bonfire night. For the first time ever a guy was constructed by the neighborhood children. Due to recent rain it was discussed that the wood might resist burning. A few piles of misc compositions and a tin of a certain potential redox reaction, lit with several metres of black match was decided as the best way to tackle the problem. After a torch relay, Sylvia Burgess lit the fuse which showed that the mission was accomplished. |
