Morrison Lake microscope 5
Sample taken from Lake Morrison 09/03/2007, put under microscope 09/05/2007. 200x magnification. This poor ostracod was wedged between the slide and a slide cover, so it wasn't able to move much. |

Ostracods, zooplankton in jar from pond
Some ostracods eats dead worm. I made this ecosphere out of pond water that I filed the jar with. The whole action took place one month after the ecosphere was made. More about that: http://eigio.user.lt/eco.html |

"Bugs" in my aquarium
These are little white swimming things that have mysteriously appeared in two of my 10-gallon aquarium. All that was added to the aquarium was fish food. I have no idea where they came from. They are probably ostracods or copepods. At least, that's what I've been told. |

Predator and Prey
This is life in a petridish. It is the equivalent of the fight for survival on the plains of Africa between predators and prey in miniture. The water beetle is no more than 1.5mm and the ostracods a fraction of a mm. The initial attack is on a tiny cyclops which is devoured. A larger one can be seen just to the lower right of the water beetle.Often when the ostracod is attacked it clams up and eventually released to live another day |

Barnacle cyprid
After the Naupilus stages (1-5)The barnacle comes to this stage where it looks around for a place to settle permanently .It puts down proteins for other cyprids to read on the rocks so they may settle there too. |

Continental Drift - Lesson 9 - Part 7 of 7
Part 7 Continental Drift -- Understanding the Earth Host; Dr. David Pearson. •Continued... Edwin H. Colbert his interest in continental drift based on fossils -- Lystrosaurus Zone (Triassic) Fauna from Antarctica •http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/161/3840/460 •Ostracods http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostracods •Gondwanaland -- Southern hemisphere continents formed 500 million years ago, Started splitting 180 million years ago •Evidence of continental drift through glaciation 450 million year old rocks •Paleomagnetism in the southern hemisphere. ............................ Today, continental theory is superseded by plate tectonics. Continental drift treated only the continents as jigsaw puzzle whereas plate tectonics treats the continents, oceans and the earth's crust as pieces of jigsaw puzzle. These segments are a flashback to part of the development of the current theory |

Bioluminescence in the Porcupine Seabight 2
This video of bioluminescence on the seafloor is taken by the ISIT lander at 1000m in the NE Atlantic (Porcupine Seabight). When the lights are on the arrow tooth eel Synaphobranchus kaupii are visible swimming around the bait. When the lander lights go out, all that is visible are bursts of bioluminescence emitted by small crustaceans called ostracods. Ostracods are believed to use bioluminescence as a defensive mechanism (temporarily blinding the eels to escape predation). A dog fish appears at the end of the sequence. Video footage copyrig ht OceanLab, University of Aberdeen. |

This video of bioluminescence on the seafloor taken by ISIT camera in the Rockall area of the NE Atlantic at 1000m depth. The arrow tooth eel Synaphobranchus kaupii eels are visible when the lights are on and only bioluminescence is visible when the lights are off. This video shows individual ostracods emitting clouds of bright light. Video footage copyright OceanLab, University of Aberdeen. |
