Theatre organist/pianist Thomas Fats Waller Jail House Blues

Thomas "Fats" Waller was probably one of the best-remembered musicians to play the theatre organ. Certainly most of his fame came as a jazz pianist. Here Mr. Waller plays "Jail House Blues." He recorded this roll in June 1924 for QRS #2670. This roll was recut by Blues Tone Music Rolls of Palatine, IL. Waller played a Wurlitzer piano console organ in the Lincoln Theatre in Harlem. In the late 1920s he made a series of recordings at the Camden Studio Estey pipe organ. Still later on a European tour, he recorded several solos and instrumentals on a Compton pipe organ. Waller said, "The pipe organ is the instrument of my soul. The piano is the instrument of my stomach." Piano is a Beckwith "garden variety" player piano supposedly built in 1902 (according to serial number sequence) but more likely is from around early 1918.

Dall Wilson: Passion-Hymns. Organist: Jared Lamenzo

Dall Wilson's adaptation of Hallgrimur's Passion-Hymns played on the 19th-century Henry Erben pipe organ by Jared Lamenzo at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral, NYC's SoHo at 263 Mulberry St. Order the Passion-Hymns at http://stores.lulu.com/dallwilson The Passion-Hymns, the 1657 Icelandic Easter Saga, were set to music of fifty Moravian hymn-tunes. Dall Wilson adapted it to English for concert performance. Hallgrimur combined traditions of the Icelandic Saga Poet and the Moravian singing-service to create his Easter musical. Moravians, the Unitas Fratrum, published the first hymnal in Europe and grew from the Orthodox current of the Christian ocean with a motto, "Unity, Liberty, Love." Hallgrimur was a Lutheran Pastor. The gorgeous Erben organ at Old St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral is ideal for these stately hymns and its healing message which unites Christian life. Old St. Patrick's NYC was the first St. Patrick's built in America.

Thierry Escaich, the World's Greatest Modern Organist

Along with my buddy Rick Knoop, I met Thierry a couple months ago following one of his concerts at the Cathedral in downtown Louisville. When he heard that I was to be living in France this summer, he offered me the opportunity to watch him play at his home parish of St. Etienne du Mont in Paris. Thanks to Thierry for letting me film a short segment of what was an amazing performance at an otherwise normal Sunday mass. Thierry just dropped an album in May and is represented by Universal Music. Check him out at: http://thierryescaich.artistes.universalmusic.fr/
