It was also Adolf Hitler's last offensive in the war. This offensive was called Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein (Operation The Guard on the Rhine) by the German armed forces (Wehrmacht). It was officially named the Battle of the Ardennes by the U.S. Army, but it is known to the general public simply as the Battle of the Bulge. The offensive was launched in the Ardennes. The German offensive was supported by subordinate operations known as Unternehmen Bodenplatte, Unternehmen Greif, and Unternehmen Währung. Germany's planned goal for these operations was to split the British and American Allied line in half, capturing Antwerp, Belgium, and then proceeding to encircle and destroy four Allied armies, forcing the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in the Axis Powers' favor. The Ardennes Offensive was planned in total secrecy, in total radio silence. Although ULTRA, the Allies' reading of secret German radio messages, suggested a possible German offensive, and the United States Third Army predicted a major German offensive, the attack still achieved surprise. The degree of surprise achieved was compounded by the Allies' overconfidence, their preoccupation with their own offensive plans, poor aerial reconnaissance, and the relative lack of combat contact in the area by the U.S. 1st Army. Almost complete surprise against a weak section of the Allies' line was achieved during heavy overcast weather, when the Allies' strong air forces would be grounded. The "bulge" was the initial incursion the Germans put into the Allies' line of advance, as seen in maps presented in contemporary newspapers. For the U.S. Army, the battle incorporated more troops and engaged more enemy troops than any conflict before that time. The German objectives ultimately were unrealized. In the wake of the defeat, many experienced German units were left severely depleted of men and equipment, as German survivors retreated to the defenses of the Siegfried Line. The Battle of the Bulge was the bloodiest of the battles that U.S. forces experienced in World War II; the 19,000 American dead were unsurpassed by those of any other engagement. The elite SBS and RABS personnel intercepted a cluster of LTTE craft off Nagar Kovil in the early hours of Saturday and opened heavy fire immobilizing their fleeing attempt upon interception. Sixteen (16) LTTE sea tiger cadres were also reported to have been injured due to the fierce naval fire directed at the enemy. Monitoring of the LTTE communication revealed their casualty figures. Bodies of four (04) LTTE sea tiger cadres killed were recovered in a subsequent search operation conducted. Five (05) naval personnel sustained injuries in the incident. Air Force fighter jets have pounded LTTE boats struggling to each at Champion-Paththu coast after being beaten off by the Navy this morning (1st November). Air Force media spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara told defence.lk that air strikes were taken at 8.30 a.m. He added that two tiger boats destroyed and 3 LTTE terrorists were killed in the attack, citing intelligence reports. Sri Lanka Navy's elite special boat squadron (SBS) and Rapid action boat squadron (RABS) intercepted a fleet of LTTE attack boats around 5.45, this morning, Off-Nagarkovil sea. According to the Naval sources, the LTTE fleet consisted over 15 boats. Navy elites attacked the terrorists boats using their very own special fighting technique, and destroyed 4 LTTE craft and inflicted damages to another. Intercepted LTTE radio transmissions have revealed that 14 LTTE cadres including 7 brain-washed suicide carders were killed and another 16 were wounded. According to the Navy sources 5 sailors were injured in action. According to the radio intercepted reports, 7 senior LTTE sea tiger cadres including Paduman master, Pulikutti, Seran, Kannan and Kalai-madhi were among the dead.
