January 2007 Castro may be seriously ill but his autocratic regime shows no signs of relaxing its grip on power. A network of neighbourhood spies ensures 'dangerous subversives' are kept in check. There are more than 135,000 Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDRs) in Cuba. There main purpose is to ensure that nothing -- or no one -- puts the achievements of the Revolution at risk. "With the help of the CDRs, we know who is who and who does what", explains Ruben Perez, Deputy Manager of the CDRs. Committees can hand out warnings to citizens deemed acting inappropriately. Those who fail to change their behaviour are then imprisoned for up to four years. People can also be imprisoned for moving from one town to another without a visa. When released, political prisoners are constantly monitored. "I am like a prisoner in my own neighbourhood", complains one former prisoner. "I'm afraid to visit anyone because I don't like to complicate anyone's life by my presence". Few people expect life to change soon. "I don't have any illusions about Fidel Castro's death leading to major democratic changes", states one man. "The generation that created this system will still be in power".

Clip from a hilarious quiz with Dame Edna from 1992. Dame Edna's bridesmaid Madge Allsop goes rummiging through rooms & cupboards at the home of an unsuspecting contestant. Emily Perry who played Madge lived to be 100 years old and died in 2008. She features on a BBC web page - search for BBC entertainment 6383779 to see it. Her death is also reported on the BBC news site, which has put a link to my other Dame Edna video which features Madge displaying the prizes, which I put on to celebrate her 100th birthday.

This is the "Our Neighbourhood" theme tune from the late 70's early 80's Australian children's TV show Shirl's Neighbourhood. It features Claude the Crow, Norm the Kangaroo, Ol' Poss, Liz, Greenfinger the Garden Gnome, Stanley the Snake, the monkeys, Yippee the Bunyip, Auntie Mae, Ranger Rob, and Terry Norris and Gill Tucker from the very popular Austalian drama Cop Shop. Interestingly Shirl doesn't appear in the clip.

Residents from the Kingstanding Neighbourhood Forum in Birmingham have been taking part in an experiment in how residents might work with public money to solve local problems. A pilot of the Neighbourhood Performance Reward Grant was run in 2007. Kingstanding Neighbourhood Forum used £10,000 and their own efforts as volunteers to improve big rubbish clearance and deal with litter in parts of the neighbourhood. Project: The Neighbourhood - Stories Promotional Film Developer: The Neighbourhood - United Kingdom Production Company: The Neighbourhood Director: The Neighbourhood Background: Stories is a self-promotional film by multi-award winning The Neighbourhood. The film is surreal and fun, based on pop-up technology and set in a world of Hawaiian island meets Yellow Submarine. How we did it: The visual treatment is fantasy, fun and surreal and we wanted to create a sound score that was equally fun. As we had total freedom to do what ever we wanted, we began with setting up all the pop-up movements, populating the atmos tracks, and creating textures for each of the worlds. The events that happen on screen all had to be individually created sonically from scratch. We created additional musical textures for the characters movements, designed the underwater sequences to be magical, and had quite allot of fun ! Sounds we created include: Music textures, whale gulp, pop-up sfx, flamingoes, ape grunts, underwater sfx, robot sfx, cuckoo bird, camera movement swooshes, voice sfx, wing This project won Best Animation - Big Chip Award 2008

The fact that it's already late October (Oct 28) didn't deter me from another bike ride. So at about 10:30 am this morning I linked up with my friend Randy at the Taylor Park Bridge in the Don Valley. We cycled down on the west side of the River on a packed dirt trail that is quite reminiscent of a roller coaster, with all its exhilarating curves and turns. Just south of the Leaside Bridge we arrived at the makeshift dirt riding park that has been created in the middle of the woods by a group of unknown volunteers. We came across five young guys in their mid to late teens, all experts in dirt biking and terrain jumping. We spent a good half hour watching the guys jumping from hill to hill and doing 180 degree turns in the air and one of the guys told me that they usually ride in the skate park near Wallace Emerson (High School). This was their first outing on a dirt trail and they really impressed us with their jumps (check out my footage on Youtube and search for "travelandtransitions", you should see some footage of their advanced riding skills). Then we continued on southwards and came up at Riverdale Farm where we connected with my good friend Shauna. The three of us checked out the various farm animals at the farm (all accessible for free), including the chickens, horses, cows, a rather sad-looking donkey and some very affectionate goats in the barn. They sure liked their head scratched... Off to Queen Street East for brunch where we had an absolutely scrumptious meal at "Le Cafe Vert" , a place that features lots of vegan and vegetarian meals. My spinach/bacon frittata and the passionfruit creme brule were to die for. Shauna's mango chocolate parfait looked pretty awesome too. After a little excursion back towards the Queen and Broadview area and a ride past all the funky cafes and boutiques on Queen East and recently gentrified Leslieville, I rode home on Gerrard Street through Little India. Britney and little sister Jamie Lynn are out and about driving through Malibu, up Beverly Glen and finally stopping for a bite to eat at Shu Restaurant, apparently a fabulous sushi joint. Once again, our brave Britney makes a route through the throng of paparazzi with little sis Jamie Lynn in tow, not an easy feat these days. While she approaches the restaurant, an estranged woman starts screaming for Britney to "get the f*ck out of our neighborhood" and actually starts pushing Brit's little sis, Jamie Lynn! The paps come to the rescue and keep her back, as she continues yelling off camera.
