http://www.artehistoria.com/civilizaciones/videos/209.htm A finales del IV Milenio a.C., durante el periodo predinástico, las poblaciones del Valle del Nilo se aglomeran alrededor de dos entidades políticas de carácter monárquico: un reino establecido en el norte, el Bajo Egipto, con capital en Buto, y otro en el sur, el Alto Egipto, cuya capital es Hieracómpolis. El último rey del periodo, Narmer, conquista el Bajo Egipto y unifica el país. Hacia el 2900 a.C. se funda la I Dinastía y se establece una segunda capital en Menfis, para poder controlar mejor el país recién unificado, que ahora abarca desde el Delta del Nilo, en el Mediterráneo, hasta la primera catarata. Los reyes de las primeras dinastías eran de Tinis, un lugar que debía estar localizado en la región de Abidos. En estos momentos de la I Dinastía empieza la penetración hacia Nubia, aun como expediciones aisladas. Un buen número de importantes ciudades comienzan a surgir, configurándose los diferentes nomos en los que estaría dividido el reino. La mayoría de estos faraones se entierran en las ciudades del Delta, destacando las necrópolis y pirámides de Gizeh, Abusir, Saqarah y Dashur. Entre el 2150 y el 2100 a.C. tiene lugar el Primer Periodo Intermedio, una época de decadencia. Heracleópolis se convierte en la capital de los faraones de las dinastías IX y X, mientras que el declive del poder central se manifiesta en el surgimiento de capitales de nomos prácticamente independientes.
