Grabbing a silicon nanowire

This is the first time we managed to grab anything with the new electrothermal silicon grippers. This model is called the three-beam gripper - it can open as well as close. The gripper was fabricated by Dirch Hjort-Petersen, and the manipulation was done by Jakob Kjelstrup-Hansen.

Gripping a silicon a silicon nanowire in the scanning electron microscope

The video illustrates, how challenging gripping of little parts on the nanoscale is. Using a gripper from DTU Denmark, we tried to grip a silicon nanowire (length several micrometers) from a substrate. Due to the large depth of focus of the scanning electron microscope (SEM), it is hard to distinguish if the nanowire is above, underneath or between the gripper jaws. Luckily we brought the story to a happy end!

Nanowire bending experiments

After gluing a silicon nanowire to the tip of an AFM-cantilever, we did some bending experiments to test the bond between silicon nanowire and AFM-tip. The nanowire has been glued to the tip by electron beam induced deposition, utilizing tungsten carbonyle as a precursor.

Crystal truncation rods from nanowire facets.

The video shows how the crystal truncation rods from a hexagonal crystal are seen when a 2D detector is scanned through a Bragg point from the crystal. The sample consist of GaAs nanowires with hexagonal cross sections.

Nano Tekno: Everything Went Black

A dreamy medley of nanoclips showing grippers that try to wrestle nanotubes and nanowires - watch them fight for their lives, as the "giant vice" close in for a better grip. Music: Taiis.mymusic.dk, http://www.soundvenue.com/band.asp?id=3005 The films show phenomena like sticktion - the nanotubes cling to the jaws - bending, sliding, breaking and even melting of a Bismuth nanowire - who could not stand the heat from the electrothermal arm (heated by current). The films were shot by Volkmar Eichhorn at Oldenburg University, experiments done by Volkmar, Kenneth Carlson and Karin N Andersen, Kenneth and Karin made the grippers, and the tubes were made by Ken Teo and Ian Bu at Cambridge University.

Water Drop Moving Like a Beach Ball

This is a drop of water moving over a surface covered with nanowires. The drop moves due to the action of a moving magnetic field which attracts magnetic particles in the drop. The nanowire surface is made superhydrophobic so that it repells the water. The name of this method for moving water drops is known as "digital magnetofluidics". This method was first demonstrated in Madrid, Spain by Prof. Sonia Melle Hernandez and doctoral student Ana Gomez.

Automatic Localization of Carbon Nanotubes in the Scanning Electron Mircoscope

When doing automated assembly on the nanoscale, the localization and indexing of the nanoscale objects is challenging. The video shows how a silicon wafer containing CNTs is scanned for the single CNTs in the SEM. The procedure starts at a low magnification, providing automatic zooming and image optimisation (focus, brightness/contrast) for CNT-localization. The CNTs are then magnified in several steps, until tip and bottom end of each CNT is automatically registered. This step is the starting point for any automated assembly process on the nanoscale.
