India Health Survey

For tsunami survivors along the coast of India, the path to recovery is slow and fraught with obstacles. In Nagapattinam, tens of thousands of people are now living in temporary relief centers, where UNICEF has provided water tanks and is helping the Indian Government conduct an extensive health survey amongst children. What Song Shall I Sing Today? (Tsunami and Sanitation)

What Song Shall I Sing Today? journeys through the process of building of lives after the tsunami. It highlights the plight of those in temporary shelters hoping to get permanent shelters; and of those in permanent settlements, awaiting the arrival of basic amenities.

Ecosan-Shanthi Century Not Out

The film documents the rare case of tsunami-affected village Kameshwaram, where the experiment with provision of ecosan toilets has been immensely successful due to one woman's initiative. Thanks to her efforts now Kameshwaram has more than 350 ecosan toilets.

Community Radio in India

The head of the Asia-Pacific branch of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC), Ashish Sen, says that Feba's FIRST Response training taking place in Bangalore, India this week is "the first step in the journey towards introducing mobile broadcasting in India for disaster management". He was speaking to participants of the workshop which will culminate in a field trial in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. Ashish, who is also head of the Community Radio lobby group, VOICES, believes that community radio will be a powerful force for the development of communities in India and that they are on the threshold of the first station being granted a broadcast licence in the next few months.

Balwadi Pre School Children India

The Lasallian Foundation supports Balwadi, or Pre-school programs, for poor children in Tamil Nadu, including the tsunami affected area of Nagapattinam. These children come from poor families where both parents work, and have no one to care for them during the day. At the Balwadi they are given free uniforms and meals, and start their education.
