Myra Breckinridge - The Infamous Cowgirl Scene

Possibly one of the most absurd scenes of Hollywood history. High camp, through and through, but not for the faint of heart. "I am Myra Breckinridge, whom no man will ever possess. The new woman whose astonishing history started with a surgeon's scalpel, and will end... who-knows-where. Just as Eve was born from Adam's rib, so Myron died to give birth to Myra. Did Myron take his own life, you will ask? Yes, and no, is my answer. Beyond that, my lips are sealed. Let it suffice for me to say that Myron is... with me, and that I am the fulfillment of all his dreams. Who is Myra Breckinridge? What is she? Myra Breckinridge is a dish, and don't you ever forget it, you motherf---ers - as the children say nowadays."

Beethoven 'Appassionata', 1st mvt: Dame Myra Hess (1945)

Dame Myra Hess in a lunchtime concert at the National Gallery plays the opening movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F minor, Op 57. During the war years, and the blitz, Dame Myra Hess organized over a thousand concerts at the National Gallery. The Gallery had removed all their paintings, keeping just one on display each month as thousands of folks (many not regular concert goers) came to hear, be inspired, and maybe gain a little hope by these wartime concerts. Andrew Dickson wrote in his blog at the "Guardian": "the monumental Appassionata - always associated in my mind with a wartime film of Myra Hess at the National Gallery, playing those crashing F minor chords at with a stubborn intensity that takes on all the death and mayhem around."

Myra Hess plays Brahms Intermezzi and Capriccio

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): 1. Intermezzo in C Major opus 119 no. 3 2. Capriccio in D minor opus 116 no. 7 3. Intermezzo in Ab Major opus 76 no. 3 Recorded in 1941. Myra Hess Born: February 25, 1890 - London, England Died: November 25, 1965 - London, England The Eminent English pianist, Dame Myra Hess, was a pupil of Julian Pascal and Orlando Morgan at the Guildhall School of Music in London. At 12 she earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music and became a pupil of Tobias Matthay, whom she viewed as her primary teacher. Myra Hess made her debut in November 1907, at the age of 17, in Beethoven's Fourth Concerto, with Thomas Beecham conducting in London. The she performed throughout England. In 1922 she made her USA debut in New York. Thereafter she toured widely in Europe and the USA. In 1936 she was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Myra Hess was one of the best-known and most beloved of British pianists. She was a warm person and well liked, particularly in English-speaking countries, and visited America frequently. Her reputation was particularly enhanced by her innovative and deeply appreciated venture during World War II, the National Gallery Concerts. Wartime blackouts closed the concert halls of London. In the meantime, the National Gallery in London had been emptied of its art treasures, which were sent to parts of the country less vulnerable to German bombing. It was Hess's idea to open in 1939 the Gallery to the public for concerts every day during the lunch hours. Londoners flocked to these informal concerts. She arranged concerts from solo recitals to full-scale orchestral and choral music. She personally appeared more than any other artist (never asking for a fee), and got some of the finest musicians of the country to appear there. The effort was seen as a major boost to morale. In 1941 the grateful King George VI made her Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. It is said that when the artworks were returned to the Gallery in 1946, ending the musical series, that there was considerable disappointment. After the War, Myra Hess commenced touring again and continued her notable career until her farewell concert in 1962. In addition to her solo engagements, and in a departure for pianists of her era, she also took a special interest in chamber music, including participating in a piano duo with her cousin Irene Scharrer. In common with many artists Myra Hess adopted a wide-ranging repertory, including much music of her time, when she was younger, but focused increasingly on the great classic masters in later years. She was greatly admired for her interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann. Her playing was noted for both warmth and thoughtfulness. She made numerous transcriptions, of which one in particular, Bach's chorale Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring from Cantata BWV 147 (published in 1926), has become an international favourite with her audience. MYRA HESS.FIRST.Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring.1940.Piano.

The first recording,1940,by Dame Myra of her piano transcription from Bach's Cantata 147. Since then the Myra Hess arrangement has become standard fare in most pianists' repertoire.Of course none play it better than Hess herself! When war was declared on 3rd.Sep.1939,the National Gallery,Trafalgar Square,London was stripped of most of the works of art which were moved to a place of safety several hundred miles away. All cinemas and theatres in London were immediately closed. The artistic life of the capital stopped. The following month,Myra Hess a classical pianist, asked the government if she could establish lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery,Trafalgar Square, to boost morale.Permission was granted, and so began the concerts which continued, uninterrupted until April 1946. Some were broadcast. This audio clip was heard by millions, and overnight Myra Hess and her transcription for the piano became a hit. She invited many musicians, amateur and professional,to perform free of charge, and indeed it was here, the soon to be famous contralto Kathleen Ferrier first sang in London, a few days after moving down from the North of England. That was in December 1942. Admission was one shilling.(five new pence). Members of the armed forces--- admission free. All proceeds were given to the Armed Forces Benevolent Fund. Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring - Myra Hess Arangement

Here is the new video of me playing the Myra Hess arrangement of Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. The sound is slightly improved (although not much!) and the tempo has been upped slightly. It's slightly more accurate and has a much better sense of line than the older one. Keep an ear out for where the melody is as it keeps switching hands! And for the record...yes, I am wearing a dressing gown! I was having a bit of a lazy day so I thought, why not! COMMENTS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
