Cardiac Events with Gleevec (Feb. 2007)
Novartis is notifying healthcare professionals about new precautions for Gleevec (imatinib mesylate). Gleevec is used to treat certain patients with chronic myeloid leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. A recent article published in Nature Medicine reported on ten patients taking Gleevec who developed severe congestive heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction. Before starting treatment, most of these patients had pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease. The article also reported on preclinical studies showing that mice treated with the drug developed left ventricular contractile dysfunction. Novartis has now added a precaution to the drug labeling about severe congestive heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction. The company also says that patients with cardiac disease or risk factors for cardiac failure should be monitored carefully, and any patient with signs or symptoms consistent with cardiac failure should be evaluated and treated. Additional Information: FDA MedWatch Safety Alert - Gleevec (imatinib mesylate) -- October 19, 2006. http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2006/safety06.htm#Gleevec |

CAL mega drive - September 17 and 18, 2008
Register at UC Berkeley to help save a fellow Bear! Wed & Thurs, Sept. 17 & 18 Upper Sproul 10am - 4pm WWW.PROJECTMICHELLE.COM Michelle is 26 years old. Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February 2007, Michelle underwent chemotherapy for seven months but relapsed in May 2008. She now needs to find a bone marrow match to save her life. You could be that person. What you can do to help Michelle or others like her. The first step in becoming a hero requires a cheek swab and ten minutes of your time. If you are a match, the transplant can often be done entirely through the blood. We have less than a month to find a match for Michelle. The outcome is simple -- someone lives because of your donation. You could be the one to save Michelle, or one of thousands of other people like her. Your generosity knows no bounds. We cannot express in words our immense appreciation for everyone that has registered. Team Michelle has been working around the clock organizing bone marrow drives around the country to find Michelle a match. With each person that registers, we are one step closer to saving the life of someone in need. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU. WWW.PROJECTMICHELLE.COM |
