De gedachten van Bregje Segers zijn met regelmaat in Oud-Sabbinge en Wolphaartsdijk. De derdejaars studente aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen restaureert een deuromlijsting uit het voormalige Wolphaartdijkse ambachtsherenhuis. Met engelengeduld en wattenstaaf verwijdert ze oude vernis- en verflagen. Docent Peter Eyskens staat haar bij. Toen het Historisch Museum De Bevelanden het doek een half jaar geleden afleverde in Antwerpen was het schilderij volgens Eyskens 'ontiegelijk vies'. Inmiddels komen de oude verflagen weer te voorschijn en herwinnen de bloemen uit de guirlande hun glans. Wat het monogram op het schilderij betekent is nog steeds ongewis. Peter Eyskens vermoedt dat de afbeelding het jaar 1815 weergeeft. Uit de gebruikte bloemmotieven concluderen de restaurateurs dat het schilderij uit de zeventiende eeuw stamt. Behalve dat de bloemen verwijzen naar vergankelijkheid, zijn er geen symbolische waarden aan de afbeelding toe te dichten. Het monogram in het midden van het doek is later toegevoegd. Wat er voorheen zichtbaar was, is onduidelijk. Dat kan een andere afbeelding geweest zijn of gewoon een zwart midden. De restauratie strekt niet tot en met het verwijderen van het monogram. "Latere toevoegingen hebben vaak hun eigen waarde", zegt Peter Eyskens en hij maakt daarbij een vergelijking met het Louvre: "De piramide is in de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw pas aangebouwd. Maar Parijzenaars zouden het niet pikken als die toevoeging wordt verwijderd". Ambachtsherenhuis De ambachtsheerlijkheid Wolphaartsdijk behoort geruime tijd tot de bezittingen van het geslacht De Perponcher Sedlnitzky. Deze familie van Frans-Poolse origine neemt in de zeventiende eeuw dienst in ons leger, verwerft grote gebieden in Zeeland en is naamgever van de Perponcherpolder. De ambachtsheer belichaamt op het eiland Wolphaartsdijk (en dus ook in Oud-Sabbinge) het gezag en was bevoegd om in niet al te zware delicten als rechter op te treden. Van het ambachtsherenhuis is weinig bekend. Er zijn geen tekeningen of foto's bewaard gebleven. Tot 1930 (wanneer de Griffioen als gemeentehuis in gebruik wordt genomen) is het ambachtsherenhuis tevens het gemeentehuis van Wolphaartsdijk, toen nog Oostkerke. Frank de Klerk, archivaris van de gemeente Goes: "Het moet een oud pand zijn geweest met een rijk interieur. Bij de sloop gaan achttiende eeuwse stoelen naar het stedelijk museum in Vlissingen. De gemeente verkoopt vier panelen en een schoorsteenstuk aan een Amsterdamse kunsthandel. Het ligt voor de hand dat deze panelen en de deuromlijsting in enige relatie tot elkaar staan en mogelijk uit dezelfde periode, of uit hetzelfde atelier komen". Volkswagen-logo? Mag dan van het ambachtsherenhuis en het schilderij weinig bekend zijn, het monogram spreekt erg tot de verbeelding. Wat stelt het voor? Aanvankelijk werd aangenomen dat het initialen zijn. Maar deze zijn (nog) niet in verband te brengen met de familie Perponcher. Peter Eyskens denkt dat het monogram een verwijzing is naar het jaar 1815: "Je kunt de Romeinse 10 en 5 herkennen. Het was destijds heel gebruikelijk schilderijen over te schilderen. Zoals soms ook het interieur drastisch veranderd werd. De aanleiding kan geweest zijn dat de toenmalige koning van Nederland in 1815 bijzondere rechten aan de ambachtsheer toekent. Deze heeft daar met het monogram aan willen herinneren". Terwijl Peter Eyskens zijn toelichting geeft, werkt Bregje Segers stug door. Milimeter na milimeter verwijdert ze vuil, vernis en verf van eerdere restauraties. Over een paar maanden komt het schilderij terug naar Goes. Dan zijn ook de beschadigingen weggewerkt. Googlelen op '1815 perponcher' leert dat op 16 maart 1815 de Prins van Oranje wordt uitgeroepen tot Koning Willem I. Hetzelfde jaar begint baron H.G. de Perponcher als luitenant-kolonel in Nederlandse dienst. De Noordelijke- en Zuidelijke Nederlanden worden herenigd en de legers samengevoegd. Ook deze Perponcher maakt snel carriere. De Slag bij Waterloo is op 16 juni. Dan is de baron opgeklommen tot luitenant-generaal en voert namens Willem I het bevel over een divisie. Napoleon beleeft zijn beroemdste nederlaag. Al met al voldoende redenen voor een groot feest, een geste van de koning en het schilderen van een monogram. Bloemenguirlandes werden in de Griekse oudheid al gebruikt om een overwinnaar na een gevecht te onthalen.

Here goes my first foray into Windows Movie Maker... and for all of the chopper buffs and model builders, this is for you! Scored to "Mighty Wings" by Cheap Trick, the music is heroic as well as appropriate for these iconic machines.
