C3-Comores Junior Ecoguards Turtle Sketch Moheli 2006 Pt1

In 2006, funded by the BP Conservation Leadership Programme, C3 initiated the Junior Ecoguards project in Moheli. The Junior Ecoguards were established in July 2006 to stop sea turtle egg poaching among youth. After a particularly bad incident when nine nests were raided for eggs, the young poachers were gathered together by concerned community elders to discuss solutions. They decided to form a group of young leaders, comprised mainly of the ex-poachers, who could use their own experiences to educate their peers. This concept has now evolved into activities which engage entire communities in awareness-raising about endangered turtle conservation. In 2008, supported by the Captain Planet Foundation, C3 will run a summer camp at Mitsamiouli, Grande Comore to train young Comorians to be environmental leaders in their communities. The program will teach students about the environment but also actively engage them in activities that reduce environmental threats in their country. Students will receive training and education in: Leadership and communication skills Conservation methods Endangered marine species of the Comoros Swimming and snorkeling to conduct marine field research Importance of coastal zone protection -- links between forest and ocean Environmental awareness raising Beach clean-ups The programme will take place over an intensive one-week period in the field at the village of Mitsamiouli, Grande Comore. The students will participate in training, research and awareness-raising activities.

AU troops arrive in Comoros

Three hundred AU troops have arrived on the Comoran island of Moheli, to support Comoran forces seeking to oust Anjouan's renegade leader Mohamed Bacar. F24/ AFP's Emmanuel Goujon reports from Moheli.

Comors National Anthem

Comoros has endured 19 coups or attempted coups since gaining independence from France in 1975. In 1997, the islands of Anjouan and Moheli declared independence from Comoros. In 1999, military chief Col. AZALI seized power in a bloodless coup, and helped negotiate the 2000 Fomboni Accords power-sharing agreement in which the federal presidency rotates among the three islands, and each island maintains its own local government. AZALI won the 2002 Presidential election, and each island in the archipelago elected its own president. AZALI stepped down in 2006 and President SAMBI took office. Since 2006, Anjouan's President Mohamed BACAR has refused to work effectively with the Union presidency. This year BACAR effected Anjouan's de-facto secession from the Union, refusing to step down in favor of fresh Anjouanais elections when Comoros' other islands held legitimate elections in July. The African Union (AU) has stepped in to assist in resolving the political crisis, including applying sanctions and a naval blockade on Anjouan, but the situation remains at an impasse. Capital: name: Moroni geographic coordinates: 11 42 S, 43 14 E time difference: UTC+3 (8 hours ahead of Washington, DC during Standard Time) Administrative divisions: 3 islands and 4 municipalities*; Grande Comore, Anjouan, Domoni*, Fomboni*, Moheli, Moroni*, Mutsamudu* https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/cn.html

Madagascar Isole Comore

Dance of the Dugong 26AUG2006

The Comoros are home to a number of endangered and vulnerable species. Conservation Action Plans have already been devised for the green turtle, the coelacanth and Livingstone's fruit bat; however, no plans have been created for conservation of the dugong despite the fact that this species is globally threatened with extinction. Several researchers have identified an urgent need for conservation plans for this species, although this has been hampered to date by a lack of scientific information. This work will constitute the first comprehensive survey of the dugong in the Comoros and will result in the creation of an action plan and community-based monitoring program for the conservation of this species. The project will have far reaching, sustainable consequences, since protection of the dugong will also involve protection of marine habitats which are vital to local communities livelihoods, through fishing, eco-tourism and other natural resource use. C3 organized the Day of the Dugong in Nioumachoua, Mohéli on 26th August 2006.

Project Nyamba 1 - Volvo Adventure Award Winners

Poaching of endangered sea turtles has become a serious threat on the island of Mohéli, Comoros. The Junior Ecoguards decided that something had to be done to ensure that their own children would still be able to see these majestic animals nest on the island's pristine beaches. The Junior Ecoguards have raised awareness in their community with theatrical presentations and have stopped poaching on the beaches with nightly patrols during the nesting season. They hope to spread the Junior Ecoguard programme throughout the island and further their own knowledge of turtle conservation and ecotourism.
