June 2005 A citizens' patrol group in Arizona is vowing to do what their government won't -- close down the Mexico border. But that's worrying many who see them as racist vigilantes. Every year, over a million illegal immigrants try to cross the US/Mexican border. Hundreds die in the attempt. "People migrate because of sheer economic desperation," explains public defender Isabel Garcia. "It's not something that they take lightly." But the minutemen of Arizona have no sympathy. "We have out of control immigration," states Chris Simcox, co-founder of the group. He organises patrols of volunteers to hunt down migrants. The minutemen have proved so successful, they're planning to expand to other counties. But with the US economy dependent on illegal labour, the government is unlikely to heed their call to stop all immigration.

This is from the end of the WE JAM ECONO documentary, which tells the story of the legendary California punk rock group the Minutemen. At the end of the film here, we see bassist Mike Watt tell us that meeting D. Boon changed his life, much in the way that their fans were changed by their music. As the film closes, we're given an acoustic performance of "History Lesson Pt. II" from the album "Double Nickels on the Dime". The song seems somewhat sad here as we say good by to one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Closing out, Mike Watt notes happily that "we jam econo". Rest in peace, D.

After the Reactionaries disbanded, Boon and Watt formed the Minutemen in January 1980. Watt has said their name had nothing at all to do with the brevity of their songs; rather, it was derived partly from the fabled minutemen militia of colonial times and partly to lampoon a right-wing reactionary group of the 1960s that went by that name. In the documentary We Jam Econo, Watt also states that the name was a play on "minute". After a month with no drummer — during which Boon and Watt wrote their first songs, the band rehearsed and played a couple of early gigs with local welder Frank Tonche on drums. The group had originally wanted George Hurley to join, but he had joined a new wave band called Hey Taxi after the Reactionaries disbanded. Tonche quit the group, citing a dislike of the audience the band initially drew, and Hurley took over as drummer in June 1980. Their first live gig was as an opening band for Black Flag.

What often stands out about Double Nickels to me is George's drumming, what's more impressive is actually witnessing the drumming. George's rhythms look as crazy as they sound. The Minutemen 1984

January 9, 1981 at the (in)famous Mabuhay Gardens in Frisco. Black Flag also played on this bill. I'm surprised by the high quality of this considering that it is a quarter century old. Also, this was filmed just 10 days 'til Ronnie was inaugurated, so the world was still in the eye of the storm that would last eight years. This was filmed about two months after the Starwood concert from We Jam Econo. except, now you can listen "Validation" without some dickhead unplugging Mike's mic cord.This audience was a little more appreciative. Though, the Mab Gardens was in San Francisco whereas the Starwood was in West Hollywood. The Mabuhay Gardens eventually closed down five years later,however by then D. boon had died and consequently the band broke up and Black Flag broke up by the end of the summer of that year. 1986 would be rather bleak year for the CA punk scene especially due to the lost of two of it's icons. Something I made on a whim. Cohesion has nice Latin/country sound to it , so I thought it would be cool to use a sepia and old film effect to give it a Western look. I love this song, it has such a nice breezy, mellow sound to it. (Add &fmt=18 to the URL to view high quality version. The video looked much better in Windows Media Player and Movie Maker.)
