Mugabe - microclimate
This is a piece done for an exhibition in July 2007. The film explores passive reactions to political plight and social unrest as illustrated by the tumultuous regime of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and specifically the way political domination can lead to the isolation of dictatorial figures, leading to the creation of a self-sustained microclimate of existence, wherein the surrounding climate of turmoil and unhappiness is wilfully dismissed. A complex compositing procedure was implemented to create the wall which grows around the central figure of Mugabe as the film progresses. Once the main timeline was completed, the film was reversed and slowed down to a fifth of its normal frame rate, then projected down onto an ice enclosure, which was then melted as the film played over it. This process in turn was filmed with a camera mounted above the projector. This sequence was then reversed and sped up again to the original frame rate, meaning that as the film plays, the wall of ice solidifies. A similar effect could have been achieved by overlaying the film of melting ice using software alone, but it wouldn't have been the same; not as organic or integral . . . and it was a challenge making a rig out of tables, chairs and ladders and balancing projectors and cameras precariously. |

John and Maite ambassadors of WWF. Amazonas' drama
(There are 20 seconds black before the video starts) John Kelly and Maite Itoiz travelled to Brazil with a team of WWF to see with their own eyes the situation of the Amazonas rain forest and to visit the new National park of Juruena. For each sold CD of the show "Tales from the Secret Forest", one euro is going to the WWF, to manage this national park. Juruena is safe now. This park stops the deforestation advance in a big area. But still, all that mist you see in the video is the smoke of the fires, very toxic and extended thousands of kilometers causing terrible disseases in little babies and old people. This smoke creates a micro-climate and it feels very strange, very dry and warm, where there are no trees. That's why the rivers are getting dry where there's no forest. You can see very big extensions of flat soja fields or just fields for cows, where before used to be an amazing rain forest full of life. This is the situation in Brasil. If you are touched by this video, feel free to contact WWF (www.wwf.de or www.wwf.com) and ask them what you can do to stop all this, even if it is a little help. Be sure one person counts a lot. You can read a long report about this trip here: www.myspace.com/johnkellymaiteitoiz The music of the video is the orchestral version of "In Memoriam" which is included in "Tales from the Secret Forest" CD. www.myspace.com/johnkellymaiteitoiz www.johnkelly-maiteitoiz.com |

Temecula
When you think of California wine country, Napa Valley and Sonoma likely come to mind. But did you know there's a booming wine industry right here in Southern California? Hi, I'm Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips here in beautiful Temecula California. Let's learn a little bit more about Temecula wine. After years of growing pains, Temecula wineries have now come into their own with sophisticated wines, a hip clientele and growing number of elegant tasting rooms. It's no wonder that Temecula has become a hot spot for destination weddings, girlfriends getaways and romantic escapes. Roughly 60 miles between San Diego and Orange County, Temecula Valley's unique microclimate and cool ocean breezes make it a great place to grow wine grapes. And if you're here for wine tasting, you'll find almost all of the Temecula wineries along Rancho California Road and De Portola Road, just a few minutes off the busy I-15 freeway. How many wineries are in Temecula? There are roughly 20 wineries, but by far the most well known is Thornton Winery, a rambling French Mediterranean style estate known for its sparkling wines. Winemaker Don Reha took me on a tour through the wine caves, where he crafts Thornton's sparkling wine in the Methode Champenois style. We followed our tour with a light lunch and wine pairing at Cafe Champagne, where we enjoyed an elegant cheese platter and Kobe burger paired with some of Don's specialty wines. Our day in the Temecula Vineyards took us past some of the appelation's most elegant wineries, from Wilson Creek Winery, known for its sparkling almond champagne, to South Coast Winery Resort, a 38-acre luxury property with its own spa and private villas. In the tasting room, I learned that South Coast Winery won the Golden Bear award for Winery of the Year at the 2008 California State Fair. Next up was the romantic Briar Rose Winery, located inside a storybook Snow White Cottage that was actually built by a Disneyland artisan. Briar Rose Winery is home to one of the oldest Mission olive trees in the state. I met with owners Dorian and Les Linkogle, who explained that their boutique hand-crafted wines have reached cult status, being served everywhere from the Playboy Mansion to the White House. I especially enjoyed their light Citronier, made with a hint of lemon, and their rich, supple 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon. This upscale boutique winery is open by reservation only. After touring the beautiful grounds, Les showed off his barrel room — a definite man space decked out with some of his son Larry's famous motocross bikes. Here, I was among the first to try his trademarked Wine Lager, a fresh, fruit and bubbling beverage that was simply amazing. Next, we traveled to Keyways Winery, the only woman-owned winery in Temecula. And this early California-style tasting room definitely has a woman's touch, from the cozy couches and fireplace to the elegant dining room. If you're in the mood to picnic, Keyways sells a variety of meats, cheeses and wines that you can enjoy outside, sometimes with a live band to entertain you. I caught up with owner Terri Pebley for a private tour and tasting of her award-winning wines. We ended our day in Temecula with a stop at Ponte Winery, a country-style tasting room known for its cool Smokehouse restaurant and a really fun crowd. After enjoying a barbecue in the vineyards, I couldn't resist taking part in their annual Grape Stomp, reliving that famous "I Love Lucy Episode." Owner Claudio Ponte gave me a few tips before I got to stomping, and the heat began. I didn't win, but I came in second, which isn't too bad. After that workout, it was time to wind down — and a sunset tractor ride through the vineyards was just the ticket. I promise if you visit Temecula Wine Country, you're going to have a great time. And if you visit during the fall crush — maybe you can stomp a few grapes yourself! |

Antsokia Valley goes green with World Vision
Together with the community of Antsokia Valley, World Vision has transformed the site of Ethiopia's worst famine into a fertile, drought-proof oasis. Many Australians can still remember the TV images of widespread famine in Ethiopia in the mid-1980s, brought on by severe drought. Back then, thousands of people died of starvation in Antsokia Valley. Today, after 20 million trees have been planted, the valley is green, with its own unique oasis microclimate able to withstand surrounding drought. Families thrive by farming in a sustainable way and children are growing up healthy. There's often even a surplus of crops to export in the dry months. Thanks to World Vision supporters, similar projects such as Twice As Green have already brought real and lasting change to the lives of children in many communities. Ecological Architecture- Building in Bangalore part 2
Responding to the local ecological context is important.Growing native species is the immediate environment enhances flora and fauna but also modifies positively the micro climate. This house for example uses only natural ventilation. In the immediate vicinity storm water is picked up from the entire neighbourhood and about 1 million litres of water recharged into the aquifer. A bird bath provides water for the stray animals but also wonderful birds such as the Indian Pitta have been sighted here. Growing rice on the roof using grey water and urine from the ecosan toilet has been particularly satisfying since India faces 3 challenges of food, water and energy security. It is possible to build ecologically sensibly and have fun in the process. |

BBtv WORLD: Mayan Sweat Bath (Guatemala)
In episode 2 of our new BBtv WORLD series, Xeni reports in from a K'iche Maya village in the Guatemalan highlands, and we step inside a traditional Mayan steam bath, or "tuj." This pueblo began as a settlement camp for "environmental refugees" -- people who became displaced after mudslides and floods caused by Hurricane Mitch made their ancestral village unsafe. Survivors packed what belongings they could on their backs and walked miles to a bare patch of cold, windy mountaintop nicknamed "Alaska" for its extreme microclimate. Nearly ten years after the disaster and the subsequent loss of their homes, these people are still struggling for survival. Their traditions are a source of strength, and today we experience one of them -- a small brick hut filled with hot volcanic rocks, steam, and herb branches gathered from nearby mountains. Ancient wine production
Wine was produced in Armenia since the New Stone Age. This sensational announcement was done by archeologists during the excavation of Noravank's Bird Cave. They are almost sure that the new artifacts are wine-presses belonging to the 5-4 millennium BC. If the supposition is confirmed, it will mean that Armenia is the place where people first produced wine. The strange fact is that all the artifacts, stones of grape and other fruits, as well as essential amount of grain, colorful threads, garden wooden tools and even teeth of wild animals are not organically transformed. Archeologists explain it with the micro-climate of the cave. |

Shipping Container Building
As part of the construction of my house, I will be using a shipping container (mobile mini storage) for material storage. I looked into the rental cost of these units and found that It will cost between $1,200 - $2,000 per year. I continued researching and discovered there are thousands of surplus containers sitting in the port cities all over the county due to the export deficit with China. Essentially all of our goods are coming from overseas in these standard shipping containers, and once they reach our shores and are unloaded most of them aren't reused. So I found a source of used ones locally and for $1,700 I can own an 8'6" x 9'6" x 24' shipping container. Then I realized, that once construction was complete, I could utilize the watertight structure as the basis of an a building. More research followed and I hit the boards. I came up with a system that removes one size (and optionally the doors) and adds 50% more floor area. I was planning on using this for a music room / play area for the kids. The roof will protect the walls and windows (all glazing is north facing) and an inside layer of Icynene will insulate the metal skin & roof. I will also be planting some form of vertical planting (bamboo shown) to create shade and possibly a microclimate to protect the south side (I'm in the Phoenix, desert).
