This is something that I saw in the middle of the road driving back from spoonville one night after hiking the metacomet. We high tailed it out of there after this thing ran away!

This is a granite outcrop in south-central Massachusetts. King Philip was the English name for Metacomet, son of Massasoit (friend to the Pilgrims). He became very famous when he sought to eradicate the evil English who were seeking to subjugate the native's ways, culture, religion... King Philip's War took place in 1675/1676, most of it in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. More men died per capita than in any other American related war in history. In southern New England virtually every town has something named after King Philip. It was said, but not proven, that King Philip once used this rock outcropping as a camp, a place from which he could see his enemies coming. Today it is wooded and beautiful with miles of hiking trails and areas below from which canoes and kayaks can be set in the river. Some of my best canoeing memories are from this area. It's also a great place from which to observe wildlife, especially birds.
